Many popular songs have been directly or indirectly influenced by classical music, often sampling or borrowing melodies and chord progressions. Examples include Billy Joel's "This Night" inspired by Beethoven's "Pathétique Sonata," and Lady Gaga's "Alejandro" based on Vittorio Monti's "Csárdás". Other notable examples include Maroon 5's "Memories" using Pachelbel's "Canon in D," and Procol Harum's "A Whiter Shade of Pale" using Bach's "Air on the G String".
