I'd feel bad for them if it weren't for all those annoying ads we have to tolerate when dealing with this board. What the hell are they doing with that money if it isn't helping to pay for the servers and the staff to administer them?
If what the announcement said is true, that the boards are only used by a comparatively small part of users, than that could be the reason. Having a large number of page views is good, but what's also important for ad revenue is the size of the audience. And if the number of unique visitors is very low compared to the number of page views, the revenue will be much lower.

If that's the real reason, then shutting down the boards is an even dumber idea since it doesn't take much hardware or manpower to maintain them.
My bet is that with all the opposition being voiced, they'll rescind their decision to shut down the boards.

The IMBD forums were part of the birth of the internet. They've been around since the start of the net - since the late 1990s when the net really began to impact on popular culture - so it's sort of a piece of internet history. Removing the boards is a great shame. Part of internet online forum history will be gone. 😞
          History of IMDB message boards:
One of the most-used features of the Internet Movie Database is the message boards that coincide with every title and name entry, along with over 140 main boards. This section is one of the more recent features of IMDb, having its beginnings in 2001. In order to post on the message boards a user needs to "authenticate" their account via cell phone, credit card, or by having been a recent customer of the parent company Amazon.com. Message boards have expanded in recent years. The Soapbox started in 1999 is a general message board meant for debates on any subject.

I visit IMDB all the time. Once the boards are shut down I will be lucky to come here once every two months. So it it shuts down completely after a while I could not care one bit.

They really screwed up by doing this. It will still be a great site. But if people want a static movie/tv site, there are many other options out there.
                  Yuge mistake. Yuuuuge.

How would IMDB be better than, say, Flixster or Wikipedia without the message boards?

I agree with this. What they are doing is not a solution. Most times after watching a TV show or a movie I will come to these boards to see what other people's opinions are. Sometimes reading ending interpretations and such.
I will definitely miss that and I think just cutting this feature is a horrible mistake.
It's a typical decision made by people who clearly don't use the system themselves but only look at numbers.

That's why I use it too. It's often my first reaction after watching a film for the first time, to come on here and see others interpretations and opinions, but lets face it, that only works for older films with slow boards. All the boards for popular current shows and films (such as Game of Thrones for example) are completely unreadable because of the shear numbers of trolls. This hasn't been a fun or user friendly site for years because of the trolls. I only come here now after watching a new film for the first time, like I said. Never any other time, and I haven't for years.

I have been a member since 2006 and the only reason I come here is to see what others say about a movie/tv show I watched, want to watch, or I am considering watching. I rarely ever watch anything without seeing what others say about it first. I could care less about reading the synopsis or plot, or watching the trailer, that is what I have youtube for.I do not read the articles, I never read the front page, but I love the lists that members make. I will miss the message boards for sure. Hope to find a place that is somewhat like these message boards.

Unfortunately for IMDB, there seem to be several alternatives as far as message boards go.

Without the Message Boards, I'll leave and I won't come back.
Check out The Movie Database. A lot of the people from here are moving over there after these boards shut down. It's practically the exact same site as here, and they have now added message boards to all their titles.

IMDB still has a use if you want to find out about technical details. You can't find out what type of camera, film stock and aspect ratio a movie has on any of those sites.
Still, not a good idea to remove them, and I definitely won't be making as many visits.

Oh sure, the site will still have it's worth, but it's worth that will cause me to come to the site maybe once a week if that much. That's in contrast with coming to the site pretty much every day to check the boards. They generate revenue by people seeing the ads. If one of the biggest reasons for coming to the site disappears, people will see less ads and therefore generate less revenue.
That information is static. You see them once and that's pretty much it. The boards are dynamic and dynamic is what generates traffic.
As that great philosopher Bugs Bunny said, "Something tells me I shoulda stood in bed."

Sure, but how much money is Amazon going to make on ads if the only people coming to IMDB are the ones who want to see whether a particular film was shot on 35mm stock?
This site exists to generate ad revenue. That's done by people going to lots of pages on the site.
When someone goes to IMDB because they see someone interesting in an old episode of Law & Order and say to themselves "They're pretty good, I wonder if they've done anything else" or "I've seen that actor somewhere else, I wonder where that was"
They only click on a few pages.
Someone going to the message boards is clicking on dozens of pages.
