I agree, the mere fact that Pookie was a stick-up man, seasoned criminal, said it all. Fighting was his lifestyle.

I'm not sure how good he is at fighting but it is implied that he can fight.
Throughout the majority of the movie there is no evidence of his skills in fighting except for one scene after Ice-T's character is exposed as a cop. Suddenly, Nino Brown becomes a martial artist. He hangs upside down with his feet to slice someone's neck and disguises himself to take out a cop. It seemed like something straight out of the movie Commando or Blade! That's an incredible amount of skill the movie just glosses over. He became a ninja.
The way he performed those moves showed off Snipes' martial arts skills but looks ridiculous since his character is just a crack dealer. I assume Welsey requested to make that scene just to show off his skills. But it makes his character inexplicably show a incredible amount of skill with no foreshadowing.
The problem is that it's jarring afterwards when Nino Brown reverts to his normal self. So when he starts to get beat up, it makes sense with the rest of the movie but that one scene. I guess he deliberately wanted to get beat up because it's like what happened to all that ninja stuff he was doing.

No guarantee that Wesley could kick Ice-T's ass.. As far as I know, Ice-T was a gangbanger, then joined the military to get away from gang life and became a Ranger in the military.
Ice-T didn't just play and act the gangster life style to further his career Dude lived it.

Honestly, if you took the Ice T from "Surviving The Game" against Wesley Snipes as himself the martial artist, that would be a sick fight.
As for the movie, Snipes hung from who knows where and out of no where came and cut a cop up. You gotta have some skills to do that.
You gotta understand Brown came from the streets in a era where guns were not used like today. He grew up getting into fist fights which was how things were handle back then. Remember that he was still hood gangsta until his girl took him off and he took advantage and grew to be a major player.
I think they had Ice T beat the beep out of Snipes to give the crowd great satisfaction in seeing a social path scumbag like Brown get his justice served.

Well Nino seemed to have the same problem most people have:he knows how to fight OFFENSIVELY but not DEFENSIVELY.
He could punch Scotty but once Scotty swung back Nino didn't have any good defense techniques so Scotty very quickly took the lead. Keep in Nino was a coward and used his gun for everything because he obviously can't defend himself without it which is why Scotty, using common knowledge, got it away from him first thing.
Usually thugs and dealers can't fight. They just look tough because they have weapons. Weapons are an expendable crutch for not knowing how to use your body to your advantage so when push comes to shove if you can't fight you're done

This could have been an excellent fight scene, what a wasted opportunity.
