What Mary actually said at lunch when Sylvia refused the roll, was "Go ahead, it's gluten". i.e. it had had the starch removed. "Starches"bread, potatoes, etc. were thought to be the big fattening agents in the 1930's.

In the scene after Mary confronts Crystal in the dressing room, there is one saleswomen who doesnt have a line and just stands in the grouping. She is then escorted out by the elbow by another saleswoman. I always thought this was very odd.
Who is she and why is she there? She has a dazed look on her face, with a "what am I doing here expression"!

        One that ive just noticed..!
After the main saleswoman has just showed Mary into her dressing room after her little 'thats crystal Allen' walk.
We get a shot of Crystal walking into her dressing room and while shes walking in ,the saleswoman that just showed Mary into hers walks past her and crystal just kinda looks back to look at her legs or something and then smiles ..
        Weird?! lol! its pretty cute!

I love this movie, but I always hated that we never get to see Stephen. I also thought it was very brave of Mary to always have a smile on her face.

One quirky moment for me was when Sylvia is in Crystal's bathroom and picks up the "charming little extension" upside down if this was a goof, she covered it beautifully and it came out hilarious.
Afterwards, when she's laughing at Crystal for having an affair with "the chambermaid's delight," Crystal throws her cigarette into the tub I think that's the scene.
I hate cigarettes and pity the maid having to clean that tub out.
I also loved it when Mary's mother was spraying out the rooms with that antomizer after the dinner party. I hadn't seen one of those in fifty years! LOL

I have wondered if the upside down phone was intentional, also.
Possibly not, but it also fits Sylvia's character, everything she does is so ridiculous.
On the other hand, Rosalind chews up every scene she is in, and this just goes to show, who is watching Joan in the tub when Rosalind is doing her thing with the phone?!?

I've seen this film a bazillion times, but now I just caught a continuity error in the dressing room scene where Crystal Allen is about to try on a dress. The saleswoman says, "Of course not, Miss Allen. We understand." while Crystal is taking off her jacket towards the back of the room. Then the camera switches to a medium shot of Crystal quickly turning around saying, "Whaddya mean you understand?!" and she is still wearing the jacket.

I'm watching this for the first time right now and had to pause and back it up twice toward the end. When Crystal (Joan Crawford) is in the tub and little Mary is leaving, little Mary says "Good night" and Crystal says "Good night, who?"I was waiting for her to make her say "Good night, Mommy Dearest"!! LOL! Too funny!

I always found it strange that Mary was apparently just meeting her husband's notary, but before she leaves the notary almost starts to cry and holds Mary's hand.

                              The fashion show sequence
There is a segment where the models are feeding the monkeys despite the "Do Not Feed the Animals" sign. The models continue to throw popcorn/peanuts at the monkeys and then it appears they throw them into the crowd. It looks as if the audience members are animals and the models are feeding them!

quote "4) Lastly, as my brother so eloquently pointed out whilst walking by the TV, "Nipples!" I wonder if Paulette Goddard was wearing a bra during the scene wherein the Countess asks her about "the man in your life.""
Maybe I've been watching a lot of movies from the 30's lately, but it seems that foundation garments were optional back then! I've seen a lot of unsupported bazooms in those movies. I think the industrial strength bra didn't become in fashion until the 40's.

I watched again last night and noticed something I hadn't before. When crystal is working at the perfume counter, she steps into the back and has a cigarette.even though there is clearly a "No Smoking" sign behind her.

What a great thread! I, too, have seem 'The Women' a gazillion times and love it! I remember watching it with my Mum and she said 'Boy, we did talk fast back then!'.
I have a few quirky moments I particularly love:

                                    1. The Beauty Salon - As a former Hairstylist, I LOVE seeing the salon sequences. It's a real 'piece of history' - i.e. the beauty treatments; the 'permanent wave' machine; the facial treatment devices, PINCURLS!, etc.
                                    2. Crystal's famous 'telephone scene' in the Perfume Counter back room; in particular, I think it's neat she mentions the 'Quintuplets' who were five babies born in Ontario in the 1930's (and were quite a national treasure). And, since I'm Canadian, I also like the fact Stephen and Mary are going 'off to Canada' (but, just in case anyone is not sure, it's not ALWAYS really snowy here 🙂
                                      Christopher
'Theres a name for you ladies, but its not usedOutside a kennel! (Crystal Allen)'

I love this thread! Because it's one of my favorite movies!
                                          Here's some of mine:
Almost two years have passed by the time of the bathtub scene, and Little Mary hasn't grown at all! Which I loved, because she was so great!
Same scene: there's three inches of foam in that "seascape" bathtub but you can see Crystal kicking her feet in the clear water underneath when she's yelling at the maid.
The newspaper clipping and the text above Miriam "Vanities", gossiping about someone sitting in the lap of the "colored cigarette girl". Aside from that comment, I've watched a ton of old movies and I have never seen a black cigarette girl outside of "The Cotton Club".
For a movie dripping with fabulous clothing and styles, someone had Mary wearing a plaid shirt throw herself down on a gingham check couch with matching curtains.
Crystal picks up a swimming cap, complete with chin strap (!) as she gets into the shower.
At the first luncheon, after Mary tells Sylvia that the rolls are made with gluten, Norma Shearer drops a crumb of the roll out of her mouth. So surprising for a talent like Norma!
That the women's initials are monogrammed on their exercise suits.
Mary combs her hair and puts on lipstick at her home, then tells her friends she's not going out with them.
I believe the lamp base in Mary's bedroom is a male figure !!
The very odd (now) comment of being able to spread out in bed like a swastika!
That the Haines' had two different cooksone named Ingrid in the Great Neck house, and a different one (possibly named Maggie) in the town house.
                                          This is fun!
