I forgot all of the answers to your question. I saw the movie and loved it though. It made sense when I watched it though. Let me try remembering.
Oh yeah. The Shimmer was an alien invasion. It was like alien particles of some type. What it was doing was changing atmosphere and environment of Earth to fit its survival. The particles changed the DNA of all living things. It basically causes mutations like spliced human and animals DNA.
You know how in the science fiction movie Aliens, the terra-farmers were responsible for changing the atmosphere of that planet in order to suit human life?
Well the Shimmer I think had the same function. And the alien species of that Shimmer motive was sort of like The Thing. Except not as disgusting when it mutated humans. Lol

I agree with you. I like rewatching it every now and then. It's visually and tonally amazing. I love the narrative and the production design of it all. Everyone gives great performances. And that soundtrack is just perfect.
