As Deadline reported on the shifting strategies of Warner Bros. for the 2025 calendar, the outlet reported that the studio seeks to fall back once more on several proven franchises alongside its filmmaker-driven projects. One such project was a new Goonies sequel, with Chris Columbus set to return and pen a treatment, having written the screenplay for the 1985 movie. Columbus has previously been reported to have been part of discussions with Donner, executive producer and fellow writer Steven Spielberg, and Lauren Schuller Donner to develop a sequel, as revealed during a reunion event in 2020.
While Columbus joining the production of a potential Goonies sequel is a promising sign, it is presumed that the movie is still early in development. As such, it is unclear just what direction he will take with the franchise. With almost 40 years having passed since the original movie was released, any new feature that takes the trip back to the coast of Astoria, Oregon would likely focus on a new group of kids, potentially the children of the original gang members to solidify its status as a legacy sequel.
