Yes they are. I can emit a gay voice, however I choose not to.
I once made the Gay Voice around a homosexual who I believe was attracted to me. I was not talking to him, but I did the Gay Voice. It resulted in the Homosexual asking me a question, to which I responded using my normal non Gay Voice. I then terminated the experiment.
I conclude the Gay Voice is a signalling mechanism intended to screen other males for homosexuals. I conclude further that it is completely voluntary.

I don't think the Gay Voice necessarily infers that one is not tough. It may, however a lot of snooty people speak in Homosexual, and they may or may not be tough. I think a big reason for the Gay Voice is what many posters stated in this thread, society and media.

Yeah, unless you're at a gay hangout, you can never be sure. I've worked with guys and had to observe them for months before I felt it was safe to grab their ass in the restroom.

One theory is that it's an influence of media: gay characters speaking a certain way on TV causing gay men to adopt similar speech patterns. They may unconsciously believe that's the way they're supposed to sound.

But what about guys who have the stereotypical gay voice and deny being gay? I mean, why would they purposely talk like that if they're lying about their gayness or they haven't come to terms with it yet? I had a couple friends in high school who talked like that and they insisted they weren't gay. (They came to terms with their sexuality eventually.)

I just said I had gay friends, so how can I be a homophobe? And (regarding your other post) I never mentioned a lisp. That has nothing to do with what I was talking about. Just trust me. I was born with a very particular set of skills that some people like to call "gaydar."
