In some law enforcement agencies in Oklahoma they put perps in the front seat. I forget the reasons, but it's usually only if the officer gets in also.

I think the reason they gave is they find it easier to establish a certain level of trust with some perps and they open up and are more forthcoming with info. Of course, with wild-eyed druggies and raging drunks, they just put them in the back.
