It's true that most mainstream democratic politicians didn't openly support gay marriage as a campaign issue until it was politically acceptable, but most people in the democratic party supported it and nearly all understood that the politicians were taking the politically safe choice of not expressing support despite supporting it on a personal level. In that regard you could accurately say the democrats were lying about their stance on gay marriage, but it's the opposite of the lie you seem to believe. They lied that they didn't support it.
