DKR delivered one of the most unmemorable and downright disappointing sequels ever put to film. Yes, it ranks right down there with Crystal Skull in terms of huge and head scratching let downs.
TDK was fine entertainment that may have gotten over-inflated and over-praised with the passage of time. Don't get me started about Batman Begins. The fact is that TDKR is another Batman Begins without the intrigue. Frankly, that makes Nolan's Batman trilogy a dull sandwich when you think about it. TDK is the meat and the first and now especially the third films are nothing but gummy Wonder Bread equivalents. I can't believe how shallow TDKR turned out despite them trying to jam everything in to the film. Unlike TDK, REAL word of mouth killed TDKR because it's a mangled and often dumb film.
    A genuinely un-fun mess.
I know certain Nolan fanboys everywhere have been circling the wagons for years now to praise this movie but that in and of itself proves what everyone has been saying since they saw it. Fanboys wanted to like it and apparently will look past all of its flaws.
Everyone else is saying it's written like a shallow popcorn flick but with dull action sequences.
There really is nothing special on display here and it's so much LESS than the second effort. How can a film follow something somewhat good with something this bad?
It's not just the high expectations. It really is a bad film all on its own.

This sentence in and of itself proves that your analysis is cocked up.

How are you able to sort these disparate opinions and whence they come?

Shallowness really has been the doom of many a third in a franchise film. This one takes it to low levels in you're being honest with yourself.

Word of mouth killed it, huh? Well, that's pretty interesting considering it made even more than it's insanely successful predecessor. Or are you trying to say that idiots like you got out there and spread the word, thus bringing enlightenment to the masses? Either way, shut up.

The fair thing is to look back and laugh at this film. That's all it's good for now.

I politely disagree; I found this film to be the best of the Nolan Batman films; the trilogy began brilliantly in Batman Begins (the origin story was one of the best there was, Bruce's personal struggles and hardships before becoming the hero we know him as, the dark, gritty feel of Gotham City, etc.), The Dark Knight continued in true excellent form (Heath Ledger's awesome portrayal of the Joker, the themes of self sacrifice, heroism in the face of anarchy, justice prevailing over vigilantism, etc.). Last (but most certainly not least), The Dark Knight Rises delivered a brilliant ending to the trilogy and made it come full circle, while also getting back to the tone of Begins, only now Bruce's struggles are physical as well as mental; he's pushed to the very edge of his limits in this film, spiritually, mentally and physically (by Alfred, Bane, Miranda, Selina and virtually every character). The action in the film wasn't dull in the slightest: it helped moved the story along, same with the script and performances (all of which were top notch, imo). I wouldn't call it unmemorable either; Like Ledger's Joker, Hardy's Bane has become a popular villain with people, and a there are a lot of quoteworthy moments in the film: Bane's Blackgate speech, the "I came back to stop you" line, Bane's speech to Bruce in the pit, Miranda's reveal or as I call it the "knife that cuts deepest" speech, etc.
So, in all actuality, this film is every bit on par with the other two imo.

It's not surprising that Batman's pushed to his limits mentally in this movie, since he's been turned into a moron to serve the stupid contrivances of its plot.

Cause you are such an important person that everyone will take your opinion as being relevant. You are just as delusional as those Nolan fans to think that this was worse than The Avengers for instance. The only problem is that typical comic book fans are looking for crappy action entertaining movies instead of quality screenwriting.
This is depressing, it's an ending, it shouldn't be all happiness, if you want Hulk to turn from an uncontrollable freak to an ally without any explanation and see him save the entire globe without any important victims go and watch The Avengers.
                                      Feel your heart beat.

Those looking for quality screenwriting certainly didn't find it in this jumbled, nonsensical mess of a movie.
I thought Batman Begins was great and The Dark Knight was good.
I found virtually nothing worthwhile about The Dark Knight Rises.

it's not about being a Nolanite, it's the fact that the movie is already successful, whether you like that fact or not. the people in charge already cleaned up, who cares about your opinion now but you? honestly, you come off like a hater, slowly peeling long-soured grapes. maybe if, in your prescience and brilliance in analysis, you'd acted quickly and heroically enough and sabotaged the movie when it was first released, persuading millions not to see it, causing huge financial losses, we wouldn't keep seeing these types of movies. you didn't though, did ya? yeah, keep flapping your gums to no effect.
