When Apocalypse uses Cerebro to launch all the worlds nukes into space the movie portrays it as an epically terrible event. The movie understands that suddenly destroying all the worlds nukes would be very bad for the world. The movie understands that whatever potential for harm nukes posed, suddenly getting rid of all of them could actually make things worse. The movie underscores how terrible Apocalypses action is by making this one of the most dramatic moments in the film.
Its about time we had a movie that actually showed some respect for nuclear weapons. X-Men: Apocalypse is a much-needed corrective to Superman IV: The Quest for Peace, which had Superman propose to get rid of all the worlds nukes and the entire world went along with his plan without any hesitation. That was completely ridiculous. It was really dumb for people to think that Superman would necessarily be around forever to keep the peace. It was really dumb for them not to consider the possibility that getting rid of all nukes could just make conventional wars between former nuclear powers that much more likely.

That scene was the same as the Flash or Quicksilver grabbing a bunch of guns from people about to shoot him. It was only preemptive.

Yeah, what better way to toss the world into turmoil then to rid the world of it's nuclear arsenal and remove all deterrents for major conventional war. Especially with it happening to everyone all at once, as a display of strength it's total in it's ability to remove all doubt as to who is really in charge of the Earth. I can't imagine anything else (short of nuclear war) striking terror into the hearts of nations' military leaders, the sudden lack of security would be terrifying and chaotic. Many conflicts would begin almost immediately.
I love Apocalypse's dialogue during the scene as well, it's quite villainously Biblical.
        As for
Superman IV: The Quest For Peace
, the less said the better! I actually find that movie to be somewhat enjoyable but it's only because it's so bad it's amusing.

It was scary for many reasons. For one, that this one mutant can actually do something so epic, so powerful, leaving humanity completely vulnerable to his whims.

I see were you are coming from, but the idea is that it is the villain removing the largest threat humans had to combat him. He does so in a very powerful display of power, the issue with that scene is actually quite different. He doesn't have the power to control minds yet as the finale emphasises him wanting to take Charles ability to control minds, he however does that very thing in this scene.
