When Bruce wanted to quit in Dark Knight he told him to "ENDURE MASTER WAYNE" and when he wanted to fight he started bitching about failure. At least one good thing came out of this stupid movie, Alfred crying like a bitch in the end yes you failed them you stupid SOB.

Alfred in this film can sense that Bruce obviously has severe depression from losing Rachel and the way The Joker psychologically scarred him. Alfred knows that if Bruce became Batman he would likely die in the suit because he doesn't have anything to live for. What kind of father figure would e courage that?

More likely he knows that an osteoarthritic man wouldn't have a hope in hell against a berserker like Bane, magic knee brace or no magic knee brace. Alfred's stupidity was in never telling Nolan's knight the truth about Rachel and letting him brood in the mansion for eight years thinking Rachel was his 'true love'. Nolan's knight explains that he's going back into action for Rachel as much as for Gordon and the city right before Alfred finally realizes his stupid mistake.
