How realistic is this to actual black people from Harlem?

I work in the hood, one of the most violent cities in the US, and this show is complete baloney. This is probably how Rachel Maddow or John Oliver envision the hood to be like.
The Wire was a lot more realistic, but suffered from white writers and showrunners that portrayed black people talking and thinking like white people. It's just not like that at all. -

I'm a single 50 year old white male of average build. If I were to move to the neighborhood you work in, and kept to myself, and didn't bother anyone, would I still be in trouble? Would I have to feel afraid every time I left my apartment to go buy a sandwich?

I can only talk of NYC and yes White guys can walk outside. LOL

Thanks but I was referring specifically to the neighborhood that that one guy worked in. NYC is, on balance, still one of the safest cities in the world, but would you laughingly advise a middle-aged white man to "lose the fear" if he wanted to move to Watts? Or Detroit? Or the inner city in Chicago?

It's only really your age that might make you a target. But you'd most likely be fine. I lived in Harlem and East Harlem for 8 years, and as a 6'4" bigger build white guy there wasn't a time I felt at risk. If you're not involved in any of the trouble, the trouble tends to leave you alone. They don't want to attract that kind of attention.
What the show captures best is just the general feel of Harlem, more so than speech patterns. It cleans Harlem up a little though. Like, during the day, you're likely to see far more homeless collecting bottles and cashing them in or unemployed folks just standing outside on the sidewalks. That's just NY though - not just Harlem. Or maybe the MCU exists in another reality where homelessness isn't a problem anymore. -

It's really not, at least not the part where this show takes place. Hasn't been since the 90s. If you want a hellhole, you have to go pretty far up in Harlem/Bronx. Even then, compared to a place like Mumbai, Harlem is pretty nice.

Funny you say that. I'm not even white. I can count the number of times a white person has been racist to me on one hand, maybe one and a half.
Black people? It's probably into the thousands. They hate gays, they hate A-RABS, they hate Indians, they hate white people, they hate anyone who tells them what to do, like cops.
And they make no secret of this, which tells me the media is covering it up.
Go ahead, call me racist, call me crazy, any one of you can go to the hood and see this for yourself, but you probably don't have the guts or a driver's license to do so. -

I think the problem is that you're afraid IT MIGHT BE TRUE but know nothing about what the hood is like.
I'm not the only one that has experienced this. Do a Google search and you'll find a lot of similar stories that corroborate my experiences.
