I watched some of this movie the other night and sorry if I've missed something in the film/films, but why are they so bothered about the way their true selves look, when they have the ability to look human anyway? Does it take a particularly concerted effort to remain their human selves? Can they only remain human for a limited time? Otherwise who cares that your real self is blue.
I mean Mystique for instance. What is stopping her just being her human self permanently?

you answered your own question, Mystique has to concentrate all the time to keep looking human. so it was extremely frustrating for her. also she couldn't do it while sleeping and so on, so any man she would be with would have to know the truth. so she just wanted the world to accept her as she was.
as for Hank he couldn't control his appearance at all until he developed his serum

The fact she has to constantly use her power and perhaps concentrate to stay in a different form is one reason.
But also for Mystique, it's ironic because even though she can be "human" in appearance, she feels that she doesn't have to, and a lot of other mutants don't have the luxury to blend in. Like she said in X2, she "shouldn't have to" blend in because society should be open minded and accept her

Hank just wanted to take off his shoes at the beach or whatever.

Raven had a tremendous amount of self loathing. Her own parents tried to kill her. She wanted to be accepted for herself but Charles knew that the world was not ready to accept what she was and he was terrified if the world knew that they would experiment on her which as it turned out in the next movie is exactly what they did to her. Charles put that fear in her and between the fear and self loathing life was very difficult for her. Beast wasn't bothered by being mutant he just didn't want to look different. He and Raven both only wanted to be "normal"

Have you even watched the movie? Or were you on your cell phone through the whole thing? LoL!

I am not a fan. I just happen to enjoy movies. Fans are embarrassing.

So you failed to notice her characters, and Magnetos, theme that spans across ALL of the movies huh.. mutants should not have to hide who or what they are.
To dumb it down even further, think of Magneto being a jew in nazi territory, he didn't want to hide then either.
They want equality for mutants or to even be a bit feared as the next evolutionary step.
