Oh this is well planned and the thickness of the ice is measured before it is officially opened.
It gets very cold here in the winter. -28C kind of cold!
It's 7.8 kilometers long. The Rideau canal attracts many tourists in the winter. It's been open for skating since 1970.

That's a HUGE canal. Our are 1/4 that. We have narrow boats , they are called.
