An updateI just saw a clip on Lauren Bacall on TCM, which was narrated by Gregory Peck. He was reminiscing about the good ole days and his fond memories of Ms. Bacall. He starts the clip off with "They Had Faces Then . . . and Lauren Bacall had one of the best. She still does . . . " So, obviously, he thought she was a stunner, too.

QUOTE "In Designing Woman, Gregory Peck at one point describes Bacall's character as "That ugly girl."
First of all to the person that said Peck makes them sick and can't act as well. PECK'S CHARACTER CALLED16d0 HER UGLY.
Secondly he only called it because he was hung over and annoyed. The next line is "I'll even be nice to that ugly girl that was bothering me" (see's her) "Must have been another girl!"

but when he looks again, he says, "must have been a different girl!"
I don't think she would disappear in a room with Ava Gardner, though too much presence. She has an unusual, almost harsh look, but very sensual and commanding.
My brother once commented that she looks better older [as in, Dinner At Eight] idunno, I think the same thing of Sean Conneroy.

personally i think lauren bacall was & is stunning. plus she has aged so well & beautifully (like catherine deneuve has) but still i can't help but agree about ava gardner! but then she had a such a raw, natural sexiness - a real broad - that even marilyn monroe (whom i adore btw) would have found it hard (even in her full made up marilyn finery) to out shine ava in a room not just for her looks but for her whole way of being so confident & ballsy

Bacall isn't really ugly, she was hot but she'd disappear if Ava Gardner was in the same room with her. I'm sure even Bacall herself would admit that. She's shown herself to be a frank woman and sometimes she could actually be frank about herself.
              See but that's
              YOUR
opinion because I don't find Ava Gardner to be more beautiful than Lauren Bacall, I don't even find Ava Gardner mesmerizingif you had said Rita Hayworth was standing by Lauren Bacall, I could see your point.

Lauren Bacall is so sexy and beautiful, I wish there were more role models like her right now for our young girls that are growing up. Lauren was strong, sexy (legs that went on forever)and smart. She never (and hasn't) acted the big boobed dyed blonde air headed celeberity that are role models for our girls today.

I've always thought her to be ugly. She was certainly not as beautiful as other women of that film era ( her younger years. But she is very confident that she is attractive so if she is comfortable with her looks, more power to her I guess.

If Laren Bacall is and was very ugly then Monroe was ugly and Audrey Hepburn was just okay. That would make me a pimple on Sophia Loren's butt. Okay then.

You are correct about Betty at 81, She aged very well from 45 thru her 60's. I wished I do as well as her in 20 years!!

Are you insane im am in my early 20's and i really wish time machines would hurry the hell on Because I mean Damn she was fine. Its those eyes that stopped me cold. I also prefered her with Dark colored hair. It was her staire. Just like in the lines of Sophia Loren, and Rita Hayworth. they were all stunning. I mean at least back then women could look drop dead sexy plus act. Now a days they cant have both of those traits without some kind of surgery be it brain or face. They Had class, finesse, at least they waited behind closed doors to let any dark secret happen instead of doing stupid stunts INLCUDING STUPID MOVIES like many of TOdays Female Sex Symbols do willingly. I mean come on Kate Beckinsale Damne Van HElsing, And the ones who are great actreses arent hot at all. Gwenth Paltro looks like a scarecrow
The women of yesterday looked damn good and also could act damn good

I think she was sexy-ugly. There is a such thing, sort of like Barbra Streisandshe's ugly, but everything she does is sexy. Lauren Bacall isn't really UGLY, but she's not exactly a stunning beauty. She is, however, very sensual. The one thing about her that annoyed me a little is that she has that whole nostril-flaring thing going on when she speaks. After a while though, I found it to be a cute touch.
