Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Jodie Foster

    Mitzishark — 13 years ago(January 21, 2013 01:09 AM)

I'm sorry if this sounds a stupid question, but I'm just curious- how exactly did people know, decades ago, that she was gay? I'm not sure how long she had been in a relationship with Cydney Bernard, but I have the idea that people were suspecting her of being gay even in the early 1990s. Was there any evidence of this, or did people just get a gay vibe?

Because they had eyes in their heads.
Anyone could tell she was a lesbian. I saw an interview with her when she was a high school senior. I hardly knew who she was. I said to myself, "That girl is a lesbian."
And my gay and lesdar is mediocre.
      Sheesh.

To the lesbian community she was gay since day one.
People in general only started getting suspicious later.
The people you're referring to are the ones who assume everyone is straight until they see a sex tape proving them otherwise. Specially if the person in question is not "masculine looking".
People still deny Clea Duvall (even though she made out with a woman in a park like three hours ago). Ellen Page. Amber Heard.
It's obvious if you're inside the community and you're not wearing your "OMG I HOPE SHE'S GAY" goggles.

I was sure after the Out mag campaign. I don't have a radar of any kind but with JF it all makes sense when looking back. And in some way that's what lesbians probablyfind mirrored in her - their own sTories, the similarities how you and she look and behave. And in JF's case the roles she played. I don't known why exactly but I still say it could have been an accident (without the negative connotation I mean). And the other hand is there really anyone who could imagine her as being so "normal", that the fact she likes girls in reality is something like icing on a cake, the last detail that finally proofs how special she is. Of course she who object to saying she is special lol.

can someone actually point out "Quotes" or things that actually made you know she's a lesbian. I know a few replied saying i read an interview and instantly knew she was a lesbian but like what it in those interviews or quotes she made that made you know?
iam just asking because iam a Bi female and the only reason why i knew is because of alll the rumors. However if i just watched her acting and see her interviews i had no clue. so the funny thing is iam actually apart of the LGBT community and i have absolutely no clue until i heard the rumors. my gaydar is shocking. lol

She doesn't have a gay vibe, you are right. When she was younger though, she was quite the tomboy.
It's actually been what you would call 'an open secret' in Hollywood for years that Jodie is gay. In other words, people there knew it but respected her enough not to blab to the media.
I think she's the saddest girl ever to hold a martini.

I kind of figured it out when I noticed she didn't have a male love interest. Jodie Foster is an attractive woman she's a femme lesbian not a butch yet she never had a boyfriend at least that the public knows of. Whenever a gay or lesbian celebrity's private life is off limits that's generally when you know something is up.

I didn't realize it until someone said it flat-out on a show, well before Jodie had made any statements indicating it (I think it was Lizz Winstead on the first incarnation of The Daily Show), but as soon as I heard it I was like, OHH! Of course!
Besides gaydar, though, she never really hid it. People in Hollywood all knew it, it just wasn't a news item and she didn't make any formal statements about it. (Keep in mind most of her career so far has taken place before people talked on the internet about famous people's personal lives twenty-four hours a day.)

                                  To the original poster:
Pretty much what everybody else has already said. I had eyes on my head, and a working brain. I could tell since "Candleshoe" and "Freaky Friday" that she was a lesbian. It's the way she spoke and carried herself.
Then there was the way she was never seen with a boyfriend, ever, at any point. By the time the 90s rolled around she had blossomed into this beautiful and feminine looking woman (gone was the tomboy schtick from her teenage years) but still.she never had a guy on her arm, ever, and was never photographed kissing and cuddling with a guy, ever. If she'd been straight she coul2000d have had her pick of the litter as far as men go. So by that point in the 90s it was blatantly obvious.
Lesbians also often have a weird, flat way of speaking, and Jodie has that way of speaking. Tracey Ullman did a good job of mimicking it in her Jodie Foster spoof:
So even though Jodie looked feminine, there was still this underlying masculine quality to her.
There's also the way that in any movie where she needed to smooch with a guy she always got stiff and awkward looking. I've never seen her generate sexual chemistry with any guy in any of her movies.
I don't get how people didn't see and notice these things. Really strange. It's amazing how many people out there just see what they want to see, and don't really notice anything going on around them, and don't pay attention to other people.

I never really took any notice of whether she was gay or not. Even guys who act effeminate, I'm careful not to assume that's a confirmation that they're sexually attracted to other men - they might just be a bit dainty, which is sometimes the case.

I never really thought about it, to tell you the truth. I've always been a fan of her work and still think she's very attractive. Sometimes it's that they want that particular actor, singer or character to be gay, if that makes any sense. Look at Sisqo from Dru Hill or even Tinky Winky from the Teletubbies. Sisqo's denied that for years and said that he's straight, people still say he is. Same with Will Smith, Jamie Foxx, Duane Martin and others. Ellen Page & Clea Duvall could be lesbian, if they are, they're not as open with it as Drew Barrymore & Angelina Jolie have been. With Jodie, a lot of people say it was because of her personality and how she was never seen with a man other than her friends.
"I am the ultimate badass, you do not wanna *beep* wit me!"- Hudson in Aliens.

                                        To Dani119:
I don't really like the tone of your reply, to be honest. You seem to be implying that because I asked how people knew how Jodie Foster was gay, I'm stupid. "I had eyes on my head, and a working brain."
You go onto say '[] by that point in the 90s it was blatantly obvious.'
I was born in the 90s and so I was too young to be aware of media coverage of anything much. That's why I posted on this board to ask about peoples'conceptions of Jodie Foster during this period. It is not because I don't have 'eyes on my head' or a 'working brain' that I was unable to detect any possible signs of Jodie's homosexuality in the 1990s. It is because I was too young.
'Lesbians also often have a weird, flat way of speaking, and Jodie has that way of speaking.' I'm not trying to start anything here- genuinely- and I'm not going to go down the whole 'that's offensive blah blah blah' route. But I think what you mean is 'masculine' rather than 'weird' and 'flat.' Jodie has never sounded flat to me, and I have heard many gay women speak, and they all sound 'normal', though a few have had that more 'masculine' quality. But very, very few.
'I don't get how people didn't see and notice these things. Really strange. It's amazing how many people out there just see what they want to see, and don't really notice anything going on around them, and don't pay attention to other people.'
Is that aimed at me? Because I never ever said that I myself didn't think she was gay. But even if I hadn't, not picking up that someone is gay isn't this big act of selfishness that you make it out to be. So stop being so 'holier than thou' about it all.
