I think it was an "open secret" in Hollywood for decades. Jodie always preferred not to talk about her private life to the press. Probably other stars' managers or PR people would give them the heads-up so that they wouldn't pester her with stupid questions.
As for me - I can't even explain it. My friends and I just always "knew" Jodie was probably gay, but we never cared because we grew up seeing her, and we loved her so much. There were a few other girls from the 70s era that we always figured were gay besides Jodie.
When she was nominated for best actress in Silence of the Lambs, there was a big, noisy push in the LGBT community for her to come out in her Oscar acceptance speech. (She didn't.) That was way back in 1991, so yeah, a lot of people had figured it out long before that. -

It shouldn't matter if the actors or actresses are gay or straight. I really like actors and actresses that transform into in new or different characters and you see a whole another person in the role than who they really are in reality then they are really showing they can be dynamic as an actor or actress and when that happens they should be considered to be very talented in their work.
