Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Mira Sorvino

    jeffyoung1 — 11 years ago(August 03, 2014 10:36 PM)

While watching FALLING SKIES tonight, I thought I recognized actress, Mira Sorvino, only much more aged than her Hollywood glory days in the late 90s and early 2000s. I had to go to IMDB to verify it was her.
Other than that, Mira Sorvino's acting career is fairly normal and typical of a Hollywood actress formerly from the A list at the height of their fame and good looks. Sorvino grew older, the right movies didn't come along and she withdrew into the B list but fortunately, she remained employable for television, which allows her to pay the bills and live in a respectable place. I am happy for Mira S. that she still has an acting career. After all, no one expects to remain youthful and beautiful/handsome forever. We all end up aging. There's nothing more pitiful than to learn of an aged, washed-up actor or actress reduced to obscurity and poverty, even beggary, living out their days reminiscing of their glory days and desperately wishing for a miracle come-back that will never come. Just read Kenneth Anger's controversial, HOLLYWOOD BABYLON and HOLLYWOOD BABYLON II, and it is chock full of these sad, even tragic stories. Mira Sorvino is still a successful actress, even if by television and that says a lot.

I think it all depends on the types of roles she does. She kept busy after her Oscar win in 1996 but didn't just go for any roles. Some people do that and it hurts them. I think she just worked steadily and also wasn't afraid to do TV stuff after the Oscar win. That is another factor.

I always felt like she had great potential and I'd wished to have seen her in more 'starring' roles. But at least she's kept working and for an actor that's the most important thing, I guess.

I think why Mira Sorvinos career hit a downturn is kind of obvious, she was arguably, never really a popular star to begin with. She of course, got a lot of notoriety and buzz from her Oscar win. Because of her Oscar win and Mira being a young and very beautiful woman, studios started to promote her heavily in movies that wound up doing poorly. What also helped in getting Mira some press was her dating Quentin Tarantino for a while, who was the hot new director at the time thanks to
          Pulp Fiction
          .
I wonder if Mira in part, suffered from the same sort of problem as say for example, Kurt Russell, Tom Berenger or perhaps Brendan Fraser, if you want to talk about men. What I mean is that because of her versatility so to speak (meaning, that she could just about do any genre), she was never truly able to find her niche or brand. In 2000other words, nobody really knew what to expect when they went to see a Mira Sorvino type movie. It was as if, Mira was kind of a character actress in a leading ladys body if that makes sense.
I guess, Mira had her biggest success in comedies like
          Mighty Aphrodite
          and
          Romy and Michelle
, but neither of those movies were really, massive hits (even w/ Mira winning an Oscar for the former). Basically, at the end of the day, Mira simply ran out of time to capitalize off of her Oscar win and audiences/Hollywood in general decided to move on.

Tell your mother to file a lawsuit against the Trojan company. She'll make lots of money.

Take srklondie's advice; he knows from experience as his mother did the same thing and can finally afford a bigger basement for him to flaunt his embarrassingly low IQ all day on IMDB.
