Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Mel Brooks

    dogluver — 20 years ago(June 26, 2005 12:18 PM)

I live in Boston and was visting my parents several years ago in Manhattan. They live the upper East Side and it was common knowledge that at the time, he lived across the street in another high-rise, in the penthouse apt (all the doormen from building to building talk, ya know!). So anyway I was getting out of a cab late one night, just as he was walking towards his building. I usually don't bother celebrities when I spot them (I've seen a bunch, just because of where my parents live) but I just HAD to approach him and say "hi." He was, by far, a TRUE CLASS ACT. The most sweet and unassuming man I've ever met. When I raced over to say "hi," he was actually startled for a second, because I was yelling his name and he looked nervous, as if there was a young girl in trouble! (I was about 30 at the time, but everyone thinks I look like I'm about 18). So when I told him how much I've enjoyed his movies, etc, I swear to God he acted as though I was the only person who ever complimented him! He said, "that is so nice of you to saythank you so much!" Then he started asking questions about little 'ol boring me! Like I said, he's a true class act. I hope he's coping as best as one can since Anne died fingers crossed

I agree. I don't think we've heard the last of this most wonderful comrdian. I think he's got a few more movie's/plays left in him, but first he's got to gtrive the love of his life.

I know, that's why I was so glad to have met him - it only makes me enjoy 111chis work more! And I thought the same as you - that he was really down to earth - even before I had proof. So anyway, I'm so glad these boards exist so we can swap stories like this. Meeting him was definitely a highlight in my life:)

I bet Mel Brooks is a great guy. I have always been a huge fan of his. He reminds me of my grandfather. They had similar voices and looked alike AND WERE HILARIOUS!

Sorry to bump my own post, but I really wanted people new to the board to read what I experienced with Mel, first-hand. It was one of the best days of my life:)

I would like to meet him too he's a living legend!!!!!!!!!
And with my acting dream (I have played roles in some plays, and been an extra in several films) it would be a dream of my life if I could be involved in his work. But I guess that will never happen 😞

Wow, that's excellent. Gene Wilder should take some lessons from him.

I just went to the Soundtrack signing for Young Frankenstein and met Mel! I can confirm he is a lovely person and seems so healthy and energetic for a man of 81. I was also fortunate enough back in the early 90's to meet Gene Wilder who was also very gracious to me.

Recently, I wrote a letter to Mel, and yesterday, I received a reply. He didn't send a letter himself (his assistant did), but I got an autographed picture.
