Horribly Miscast as Bush Sr.

Excuse me? The economy was teetering on the brink of a DEPRESSION thanks to the previous administration. Do you remember the republicans agenda during Obama's first term? McConnell said, and it's on tape, that the republican's top political priority was to make sure Obama was a one term president. And the obstruction that came from the right showed that to be the case. From record filibusters to 60+ attempts to repeal Romneycare, they've done whatever they could to hamstring the recovery in an attempt to discredit the left, regardless the damage to Americans and the country. Imagine where we'd be had the right worked with the left instead of against the country? Bush ran the country into the ground and Obama has cleaned up the mess.
Life is pain. Anyone who says differently is selling something. -

Yes, they really need to rename this t1ebchread, because the consensus is that he was outstanding in the movie. Ironically one of the other threads is on that very topic. There are those who disagree with the portrait of Bush Senior in the movie, as being dis-approving of his elder son. Read Dr. Justin Frank's outstanding "Bush on the Couch" a psychiatrist's depiction of W. and his issues with his family. The scene that depicts W and Condaleeza Rice being upset over Brent Scowcroft's article in the Wall Street Journal is very real. The article was written. It was very negative about the prospects of the Iraq war, and given the close relationship of Scowcroft and Bush Sr. there was no way it would have been written without Bush Sr's. approval. All of those who did not like Cromwell, were just people who did not like the movie and its depiction of the Bush family. Cromwell's performance was outstanding, and I agree with those who said he was deprived of even an Oscar nomination. He deserved it.

Cromwell's Poppy Bush was so spot on it was downright uncanny, and that's what I said about his Prince Phillip, too.
Cromwell's performance was outstanding, and I agree with those who said he was deprived of even an Oscar nomination. He deserved it. <

I think everyone in W. did a good job (except for Ioan Gruffudd and I'm not sure about Thandie Newton) although like one film magazine reviewer said, Poppy Bush did not sound like a gruff beat cop, he sounded like Ned Flanders. But aside from that, Cromwell conveyed the basic essence of Bush Sr. But if only William H. Macy was taller and looked more like him, he'd be perfect.

I don't see Macy there at all.
Stone apparently wanted to contrast the patrician haughtiness that he espied just below the surface of the affable Bush Sr with the plebeian vulgarity of his brooding son, Shrub, in order to develop the Oedipal angle.
Patrician haughtiness is Cromwell's specialty, not Macy's. I mean, just compare their noses if nothing else! -

Cromwell got the look and manner right, but he sure as heck didn't have the Ned Flanders-style voice that the senior Bush had.

I think Cromwell looks a lot like Bush Sr. Compare the way both of them smile, it's almost exactly the same. But you're right that he didn't sound anything like him, and HW's voice is a huge part of his image.
It's hard to think of who else could have played the role. Bill Nighy perhaps? Or Fred Willard? -

Anyone that states James Cromwell is less than an excellent actor is not a serious student of film or TV
