This is terribly sad. It sounds like Betsy died from a virus several days before Hackman, who had dementia. It would seem that she died and perhaps he ambled about wandering around their house, and he eventually died from cardiac problems. It sounds like the Alzheimer's might have contributed to why he died several days after Betsy. Betsy had picked up the dog from the vets (which is why it was in a crate).
This is so sad, all the way around. Hackman's family made a point of saying he was in perfect health (even given his advanced age at 95), but they made no mention of mental impairment. I would think if my father had this level of mental impairment, I would be checking in on them routinely enough to know he was battling this with just Betsy as his caregiver.

His children are parasites waiting to collect his fortune. Gene had Alzheimers for 10 years now. And he had a Pacemaker put in 16 years ago. His Wife died of Mouse turds. Translation, hantavirus Pulmonary syndrome

If his children were like that they would have checked in on him everyday instead of finding out the old fart croaked weeks later, you dumb dip ****.
They be like, “Hello dad? Still alive? We don’t get our money yet? OK, I’ll call back tomorrow to check again.” -

When you consider how he would have struggled on his own with routines such as eating, going to the toilet and getting dressed etc it isn't difficult to imagine the experiences and conditions of the last week of his life.
It's awful.
Maybe the lack of awareness that comes from Alzheimer's would have shielded him from the fear, confusion and discomfort that would be expected in those circumstances.
I certainly hope so. -

L loved him as an actor and personally I admired him as a Man. I pray that his suffering was kept to a minum. So sad. It really bums me out. Not that he died, I mean 95 is really really old. But how he went out. His Wife was just so reckless.

That's what's being talked about as well. His wife would also need some type of caregiver, even though she was there to support Gene. It seems like there was no one checking in on them on any regular basis. What's really sad is that the landscaper who found them seemed more connected to them than his own children.

In a way it was better this way. Sounds harsh but seems like the only person Gene had was his wife and without her who knows what his last years would’ve been like especially with his mental health in such decline. May they rest in peace and their dog too

I feel so bad for their poor dog. Apparently it just had a surgery or something, so it was secured in a crate and was probably in pain as well as not having food and water. It's a protracted and horrible way to go.
It is definitely very sad. I'm glad that she was with him and he wasn't put into some type of home. At least they had each other. It's hard not to feel sad about this whole affair. But I agree, may they rest in peace, all three of them.

It’s heartbreaking and it’s one of the reasons I avoid digging up details in such cases. You’d think with me working in the medical setting I’d have thicker skin but it’s the sort of thing that haunts me.

That's probably
why
it haunts you. With you working in the field, you're more familiar than most people about how these things might really pan out and what the people personally went through. Sometimes knowing too much about a topic can make things more difficult.
