I can't limit it to only five.
      Here are my top seven:
      The 25th Hour
      Capote
      Doubt
      The Savages
Before the Devil Knows You're Dead
      Owning Mahowny
Almost Famous (incredible as Lester Bangs!)

        Somebody actually mentioned
        25th Hour
! I think that is one that not a lot of people have seen. And yes, he was good in it.

          1. Capote
          2. Almost Famous
          3. Along Came Polly
          4. Boogie Nights
          5. 25th Hour
I know in Along Came Polly he had a small role and it was mediocre, But I loved it when he told Ben Stiller they had to leave because he "sharted". It was sooooo funny to me! He had a lot of funny moments in that film. He will be missed.

I know the film is not high-brow, but I loved him in MI3. He managed to convey -without having any of the physical characteristics that usually go along with that kind of role - a real, chilling menace.

I couldn't agree more about 111chis role in MI3. He was so good, he frightened me. Chilling is the right word. And it was great to see him in an action picture, as no one expects it.
MI3 is hugely entertaining, an edge-of-your-seat thrill ride all the way, and he was perfect.
                Will miss you Phillip.

I absolutely agree. My favourite performance of his is in Synecdoche, New York, but MI3 stands out too. Some of his scenes with Cruise are brutally intense.

I pretty much agree with most picks but I would put The Master at number 1. By far his best performance.

                            A Late Quartet
                            Doubt
One of the best actors ever. This shouldn't have happened. Still in shock.

Lots of sterling nominees here. I shall add another many of you may not have seen, an amazing animated film called Mary and Max. PSH is the voice of Max. It is not for little kids.
I have seen enough to know I have seen too much.

His best performance would likely be in Before The Devil Knows Youre Dead. To think any further would be too hard, so Ill skip it.
