Very good in True Detective.

Don't look at him as type casted then or what you expect. I saw his name on the cast list and was like wtf is this joker doing in this show since I had not watched a movie with him in it for a while but then I watched and he was freaking amazing. I don't know how anyone can mistake his performance for anything less than masterful, I think it might be because his character was so insanely unique, something not really seen before in any show or by any actor but every line he delivered was perfect.
Cinematography obsession to the max.

Maybe it was his storyline or the writing, but I was disappointed. He was so good in his earlier dramatic roles. Maybe I had set the bar too high, because it's not that I thought he sucked, but Farrell, McAdams and Kitsch were so much better.

I thought he did a good job. Sure he had some silly dialogue, but that take away anything from his performance.
Part of the problem for this season was that people couldn't separate him from his comedic roles. I never really watched his any of his comedies. Which is probably why I was able to appreciate how menacing he was. -

His acting was okay. just okay. His did have some silly dialogues, but that's not his fault (rather, the writing staff's). The way that he delivered most lines in a chopping and halting style of short (and at times, incomplete) sentences was annoying, and hence, less believable (very unnatural for real life conversations); and again, not his fault (the director's most likely). Overall, he gave a passable performance. However, there are at least five other actors could step in his role and raise the character to a much better level.

I agree he was great in TD2.
But I always knew he could handle a serious role.
They say comedy is the hardest for an actor. Don't know how true that is but I bet if your not a funny person IRL you can't fake it onscreen. Some people are try-hards though.
So he deserves a lot of credit for being funny too. Versatile I think would be the word to use for VV.

He's great in comedies but I also prefer him playing serious or deranged characters.
True Detective was definitely one of his most comedy-free roles, too bad the series sucked in the end.
Boycott movies that involve real animal violence (& their directors)
