Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Don Ameche

    PretoriaDZ — 15 years ago(July 03, 2010 10:10 AM)

Married to the same woman over 50 years and continued to do great work his whole career - he apparently knew about life and what was truly important.

They don't make 'em like that anymore, sadly.

I don't blame him. Blanche was a prize catch. Oh, wait a minute. I got Don mixed up with John Bickerson. LOL

Ameche was handsome and talented but he was not faithful. He admitted [coyly] that he "slipped" a couple of times during his marriage. Ameche was also separated from his wife beginning in 1968 and that he had a mistress. He admitted it but downplayed it.
Ameche was also distant from his children at this time, although they would reconcile before he died.
Ameche was one of those people who put their religious beliefs ahead of his family and probably still thought he was righteous. He was a generous man in a lot of ways and was a marvellous screen presence, but this idea that he was this "nice guy" and faithful husband is very inaccurate.
