Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — John Barrymore

    vinidici — 18 years ago(February 21, 2008 05:39 PM)

About a year ago when I was living in the Oklahoma City area, I was on the commute and listening on the radio to a couple of morning DJ's banter with their frequent guest, a film expert whose main function was to serve as PR for upcoming motion pictures, bring us up to date on the latest celebrity gossip, etc.
The movie guy made mention of Drew Barrymore, soon to appear in the upcoming flick he was promoting, as being the "great-granddaughter" of film idol John ("the Profile") Barrymore.
The same radio station would take call-ins from its listening audience, so I phoned in the next day to inform them, "You guys need to let your movie guy know that Drew Barrymore is NOT John's 'great-granddaughter!' Despite the fact that she was born more than 30 years after his death, John Barrymore sired Drew's dad late in his life and is, consequently, Drew's grandfather!"
The two DJ's seemed to take what I just told them with a "Oh, well, whatever you say"-type, nonchallant attitude and were apparently uninterested as to whether I was right or wrong with this bit of info I'd given them; I could almost visualize those guys shrugging their shoulders at what I had just told them!
They didn't seem to grasp the significance of the fact that, despite over 30 years intervening between John Barrymore's passing and Drew's birth, she is closer to the Barrymore legacy than most people (including those DJ's and their movie guy) realize

Sometimes it's better not to bother about correcting people. Some of them just don't care. But it was good of you to try, it shows someone cares.
I watched Drew Barrymore on "The Actors Studio" and I was surprised to see that Lionel and Ethel did not get a mention.

She did bring up her great uncle (lionel), however, on the Essentials with Robert Osborne. She was talking about 'Camille' and his part and how it made her dislike him, for the moment, b/c of his character's wishes.
