I was recently looking at the soundtrack for West Side Story and it says Jim Bryant is singing all of Tony's songs. Richard Beymer was lip sinking???? Is this true?? That makes me so mad, How could he not sing?? =(

Well, as a big WSS fan, I've heard that he didn't have the proper singing voice for the role. Apparently, the makers of the film didn't feel natalie wood did either, so she was dubbed by Marni Nixon. It's still a fantastic film, though!

It was apparently very common for movie studios to dubb voices in movie musicals. For example, the woman who dubbed Maria also dubbed Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady. I would say that back in the day it was probably very difficult to find a movie star who could perform a wide range of singing, along with excellent dancing, and acting. I don't think you should take it as though this means that Richard Beymer was not a good actor.

Just because he was on Broadway doesn't mean he was singing on Broadway. It could've been a non-singing role, or could've been a song re-worked so it was more spoken than sung. Audrey Hepburn had a pretty limited vocal range, so for Breakfast at Tiffany's, Henry Mancini wrote Moon River so it was all in just one octave (do-re-mi-fa-so-la-ti-do is one octave).
Further - when was he on Broadway? IBDB (Internet Broadway Database) has no credits for him and it's the most accurate source - it'll list someone who appeared one night in one performance as a walk-through in a crowd scene who was only on stage a minute or so. -

Oh, my my my my my my.
You must not be from NY if you think every single play on Broadway is a musical.
There are what they call "Straight" plays (which if you know the community, that term is hilarious), and then there are musicals. -

yesi am sorry to say that he didnt actually sing the songs.
neither did natalie wood.
ugh, they did this for high school musical, too. zac efron didnt sing anything, and that was a huge letdown for me.
My friend Cassidy Beymer is related to Richard Beymer, and she told us her grandfather's cousin didnt sing for this movie, even though he did broadway stuff for a bit.
(She's not lying, by the way. Neither am I. She really is related to him) -

I was also extremely disappointed when I learned that Richard Beymer did not do his own singing. In the bonus footage on the Anniversary DVD release, Richard Beymer says himself that he cannot carry a tune in a bucket. In fact, George Chakiris (Bernardo) is the only person in the movie who did ALL of his own singing. Natalie Wood was dubbed entirely by Marni Nixon, and Richard Beymer was dubbed entirely by Jim Bryant. Betty Wand dubbed Rita Moreno in "A Boy Like That" (Rita Moreno did her own singing in "America") and Tucker Smith (who played "Ice" in the film) sang for Russ Tamblyn in the opening "When You're a Jet" song (Russ Tamblyn did his own singing in "Office Krupke").

However, I would have thought that even though his voice wasnt right for the part the actor would still have to audition and possess some sort of singing voice. I heard he had a baritone voice and that wasnt right for the part of Tony. Oh well, MARIA is one of my favourite songs of all time and I still like to think whilst it plays on my iPod that Richard is singing

In WSS i think they just decided to dub everybody hehe. I think Russ could have sung JET SONG perfectly. -

Yeah, I know Dana Andrews didn't sing his part in State Fair because he wanted to give someone a job; the funny thing is that he was a well-trained singer!
To bad Richard did not sing his role. But, oh well, I love him anyway. -

I know this is an off topic reply to an off-topic comment. but Zac Efron sang in HSM 2&3 and in HSM 1 he sang the beginning of Start of Something New on the Balcony during that seem. At the time they didn't think his voice suited the songs. In the following films they transposed all the music to suit him.

Correct. Natalie Wood was also dubbed by Marni Nixon.
Rita Moreno was dubbed in a few songs as well, however, not in "America". She was fantastic in her speaking roles and that song. That is why she won an Oscar, and the other 2 were not even nominated. -

Stumbled across a clip of Beymer in WSS which has his actual singing voice, interspersed with the dubbed voice. His singing voice is pretty weak, so it's understandable that he was dubbed. Check it out:
Here's another one with both Beymer and Natalie Wood using their own voices:
