I was also extremely disappointed when I learned that Richard Beymer did not do his own singing. In the bonus footage on the Anniversary DVD release, Richard Beymer says himself that he cannot carry a tune in a bucket. In fact, George Chakiris (Bernardo) is the only person in the movie who did ALL of his own singing. Natalie Wood was dubbed entirely by Marni Nixon, and Richard Beymer was dubbed entirely by Jim Bryant. Betty Wand dubbed Rita Moreno in "A Boy Like That" (Rita Moreno did her own singing in "America") and Tucker Smith (who played "Ice" in the film) sang for Russ Tamblyn in the opening "When You're a Jet" song (Russ Tamblyn did his own singing in "Office Krupke").

However, I would have thought that even though his voice wasnt right for the part the actor would still have to audition and possess some sort of singing voice. I heard he had a baritone voice and that wasnt right for the part of Tony. Oh well, MARIA is one of my favourite songs of all time and I still like to think whilst it plays on my iPod that Richard is singing 😄
In WSS i think they just decided to dub everybody hehe. I think Russ could have sung JET SONG perfectly.

Yeah, I know Dana Andrews didn't sing his part in State Fair because he wanted to give someone a job; the funny thing is that he was a well-trained singer!
To bad Richard did not sing his role. But, oh well, I love him anyway.

I know this is an off topic reply to an off-topic comment. but Zac Efron sang in HSM 2&3 and in HSM 1 he sang the beginning of Start of Something New on the Balcony during that seem. At the time they didn't think his voice suited the songs. In the following films they transposed all the music to suit him.

I was shocked the first time I heard that Beymer didn't sing at all in West Side Story. That voice sounded exactly like his speaking voice.

Correct. Natalie Wood was also dubbed by Marni Nixon.
Rita Moreno was dubbed in a few songs as well, however, not in "America". She was fantastic in her speaking roles and that song. That is why she won an Oscar, and the other 2 were not even nominated.

Stumbled across a clip of Beymer in WSS which has his actual singing voice, interspersed with the dubbed voice. His singing voice is pretty weak, so it's understandable that he was dubbed. Check it out:
Here's another one with both Beymer and Natalie Wood using their own voices:

I absolutely agree, the matching of the two voices is excellent and is probably one of the best, if not THE best dubbing ever in a musical. Kudos to Saul Chaplin (one of the music supervisors) for getting Jim Bryant.
                      Two of the worst are
Tommy Rall being partly dubbed in Kiss Me Kate in a short reprise of "Why Can't You Behave)
                      Harry Belafonte in Carmen Jones
They were both good singers and also had very distinctive voices. the dubbgin in these instances really jars!
