favorite film?

A Woman under the influence then Faces.
The first is one of my very preferred films. Reading how this was made and how Gena Rowlands responded to John's directing is an amazing journey.

Right now it's Minnie and Moskowitz. You can't beat the scene when Zelmo freaks out on his blind date with Rowlands.

I personally find it hard to subjectively "categorize" many of Cassavetes' films as being better/worse than the others, but I'll try (note: I haven't seen Husbands or Too Late Blues yet).
Greatest works:
Faces
The Killing of a Chinese Bookie (the 1976 versionpersonally, if it weren't for Faces, this would probably be his greatest film)
Love Streams
A Woman Under The Influence
Just a shade below:
Opening Night
Minnie & Moskowitz (the scene with Zelmo is priceless)
Still pretty incredible, though not as essential:
