Actually, it was James Woods who mentioned John Cazale from the podium at the Streep AFI tribute. Very discreet. Never mentioned Cazale by name, but said that he (Woods) had just shot "Holocaust" with her and that around that time, she lost a loved one to terminal illness. They were visiting while she was grieving and Woods asked her if she were seeing anyone yet, and she said no, that she was just taking it a day at a time and trying to get through it. And then, in Woods's presence, Streep's brother (Henry Streep III!) said, "I'd like you to meet my friend, Don Gummer" and she extended her hand to shake and Don took it and kissed it. Woods said he saw a tiny spark between the two of them and was proud that he witnessed the beginning of what he thought was one of the great love stories of our time. I just watched a tape of this show a friend made for me, and this was the sole reference to Cazale during the evening.
