Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — John Cazale

Had he lived I think he would have been good as Joey LaMotta in "Raging Bull," although Joey was the younger brother and Cazale was older than De Niro. Still, I think it would have been a good pairing since the two actors had worked together before and I think he would have been terrific under Scorsese's direction.
No disrespect to Joe Pesci, though.

Rolls? Crescent, hot dog, the phantom, and of course the kaiser.

Darn, you got there first. I would have just said the Phantom.

HA HA HA HA HA!!! That's much better than what I had, but I would have added the Jelly Roll, also.

No disrespect to the actors who played these roles as they delievered favorite performances of mine but:
            "Ratso" Rizzo in
            Midnight Cowboy
            Norman Bates in
            Psycho
You're gonna be bad for business I can tell.

John Cazale's specialty seemed to be playing sad sacks and losers, i.e. Fredo in
              The Godfather
              and its sequel, Stan in
              The Deer Hunter
              , Sal in
              Dog Day Afternoon
              .
Chances are, had Cazale lived longer, he would have continued to be typecast in those types of roles.

John would have been perfect for The Sopranos. He would have been brilliant as Tony Soprano's uncle.

Totally random I was watching Al Pacino's "S1m0ne" the other day for the first time in years. And it just jumped out at me I could totally see John playing the Hank Aleno part (the guy who creates S1m0ne). It just instantly reminded me of one of his hard luck '70s characters. I almost wonder if it was intentional, it was so uncanny.
"Can it be that they are mad themselves who call me mad?"
