Yeah, I realized after watching Deer Hunter and reading that he died basically RIGHT after that. It's something else that all of the movies he's been in are terrific. My personal favorite is Dog Day Afternoon, thats a damn good movie. I've yet to see the Conversation though, might as well complete my Cazale viewings.

John Cazale was a great guy. Also all his films have at least an 8.0/10 rating. Hearing Cavatina at the end of Battlestar Galactica just now reminded me of The Deer Hunter. R.I.P. John.

It sounds impressive till you find out he died young and only made 7 movies. Had he lived I think he would have gotten very big probably about Robert Duvall or James Caan status but like all stars would have probably made a few stinkers. All his co-stars in the Godfather films have done some real stinkers, Cazale just lucked out in the film dept to be in 7 real good ones.

One of the extraordinary things about this amazing actor is the fact that all five of the the feature films in which he appeared were nominated for a Best Picture Oscar, and three of them won that award. He himself deserved nominations for all of those performances,in my opinion especially for Dog Day Afternoon and Godfather II. His resemblance to Brando in the later scenes in that film are chilling and uncanny. When people talk about the brief life and comet-like career of James Dean, I always think of John Cazale, and the similar impact he had.
My favorite Cazale moment is the one in Dog Day Afternoon when Pacino asks him what country he would like to escape to, and he says "Wyoming." His reaction when Pacino tells him that Wyoming's not a foreign country is more than priceless. I've been to Wyoming, so I can understand his confusion. (Joke if you're from Wyoming, please don't shoot me.) -

nou — 20 years ago(February 28, 2006 05:49 AM)Yes, John Cazale has a short list of films he's been in, perhaps he might have eventually made some clunkers if he didn't pass away and simply leave a fantastic resume and legacy, we'll never know though will we!?! So here's another way to put it: IS THERE ANOTHER ACTOR WHO'S BEEN IN FIVE ==CONSECUTIVE== "ACADEMY AWARD" NOMINATED FILMS?

Even aside from the success of his films, the number of great performances he gave (five) divided by the number of films he made (five) gives a perfect one - which could be said to make him the most consistently great film actor ever!

I didn't really know anything about him as a person. I'm glad to learn that he was one of the good guys offscreen! The award renaming would be a lovely gesture that I'm sure would be popular with a lot of actors. If enough people backed the suggestion, who knows?

I love john cazale, so don't take this the wrong way. Three best pic noms in two years was beaten by John C. Reilly for Chicago, the Hours, and Gangs of New York. All nominated the same year. None as good as any of Cazale's films however.

I 111csuppose it is, if you put it that way
But consider this: Put Dog Day Afternoon, The Godfather II and The Conversation up against The Hours, Gangs of New York and Chicago Also, it is debatable whether those latter three should have been nominated for Best Picture at all (esp. Chicago).
Anyway, Reilly's feat on paper is very impressive, but how will those three films be regarded in 30 years time? -

I concur that there's gotta be other people with that can make this claim but they've gotta be people who played like "man #2" and "passerby #3" in several movies as opposed to having major supporting roles in all of them like Cazale.
The only way you could know for sure is if there was some sort of program that could scour IMDB for such a filmography but until then you can only really say that Cazale is the only known actor with this distinction.
