Only six out of their 17 films could have been contemporary at the time of making although The Big Lebowski (1998) is set in 1991 so is almost contemporary for the time. The six are Blood Simple, Raising Arizona, Fargo, Intolerable Cruelty, Ladykillers and Burn After Reading. They seem to like the mid 20th century. True Grit is their only film set earlier

It has been noticed - and it's also been noticed that they have a film representing each decade of the 20th Century, starting with the 1920's (apparently with the sole exception of the 70's). There once was a thread about it, but it seems to be gone now, so once more:
1920's - Miller's Crossing
1930's - O Brother Where Ar't Thou
1940's - Barton Fink & The Man Who Wasn't There
1950's - The Hudsucker Proxy (and, it seems, Hail Caesar)
1960's - A Serious Man & Inside Llewyn Davis
1970's - none (No Country takes place in 1980)
1980's - Fargo + then-contemporary Blood Simple & Raising Arizona
1990's - then-contemporary ones
