Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Greta Garbo

    MyMovieTVRomance — 12 years ago(July 24, 2013 12:07 AM)

The way she moves so deliberately, so sensuallyshe strokes all she comes in contact with, into a willing submission, with every move she makesThe way she purses her lips whenever she says certain things, like "My beloved!" (in "Mata Hari")! That voice is like poetry in a single sound. That mouth is one that begs to be kissed with each word of love. Every utterance evokes emotional intensity, and her vocal tone is husky, commanding, mischievous, and powerfully sexual! Add to that her bewitching looks, and we, the viewers, are enchantedin fact,
    intoxicated
    by Garbo!
Without getting into too many details (don't want to get deleted), I will say that Greta really gets me hot n' bothered! Whew! I watch her, and I am swept away in desireunadulterated DESIRE! Get it? Oh gosh! I just want to hit the hay then and there.I mean, she sends me to a dream worlda world where I am the guy she's making love to (and I'm not even a guy!)ah, heaven!
See, THAT is star-power! With Greta, many of her early Talkies wouldn't amount to a hill of beans, but she makes something of them, by her presence alone. And, truth be known, in so many cases, when it comes to early Talkies and Silents, it's the stars I'm watching for, not the films themselves, and this is especially true where Garbo films are concerned.
Oh how I wish that movie-watching could be like virtual-reality and I could be right there, enjoying every kiss, every sigh, every embrace! Mmmmm! Ahhhh! Oh, Greta!
Please excuse typos/funny wording; I use speech-recognition that doesn't always recognize!

That's whats great about actors of old they knew how to create experiences on film. They knew how to pull you in to where you felt like you were there with them they were able to do it .With their presense and prowess as actors using nothing more then themselves .They talked and connected with you on a deep sub conscious level.
You get that with stage actors from what you described OP it sounds like greta mastered the stage .She brought that too her films probably im guessing thats why i like you watch mostly black n whites .They are soo much more interesting then alot of films today and the actors are more compelling .They create a full experience for you to experience.
Therefore we may call that art true at which does not seem to be art."

Agreed!5b4 I've said before, that in rating classic actresses, I would like to cuddle with & protect Pickford & Gish, make out with a young Bette Davis or Joan Crawford in a rumble seat or just sit & stare into the face of Audrey Hepburn or Gene Tierney but for Garbo I (like many of the male characters in her films) would throw away my career, reputation, etc. Still photos somehow don't capture her magicneither do her silent films. On screen (in talkies), though, she is magically intoxicating. You are not alone, brother!

Very evocative and beautiful opening post!
I am a straight female and Garbo is the ONLY woman I have ever seen on screen or in person that makes me dizzy. I would probably turn lesbian over her. She is unbelievably sensual and amazing.
