Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — James Garner

Am I the only one who thinks that some of Garner's very best work was in that string of TV-movies he did in the 80s and 90s? I recently had a chance to watch some of these (and many are not available on DVD, so you have to watch them on Youtube or find bootlegs) and he is spectacular in every one of them. He stopped doing comedy, for the most part, and actually really shone as a straight dramatic actor.
    The movies:
    Heartsounds
    My Name is Bill W.
    Promise
    Decoration Day
    Barbarians at the Gate
Heartsounds is not available on DVD. This needs to be rectified. It's the one co starring Mary Tyler Moore, where Garner plays a heart patient lost in the medical system. Still an extremely timely subject 30 years later, and very hard-hitting. Certainly one of the best TV-movies ever made.

I forgot about Barbarians at the Gate. That was a great TV movie. Even if the vehicle was weak, Garner always delivered.

Yeah, Heartsounds is not unavailable because it's no good, or because it's a subject no one cares about.
This gives you an idea just how much influence the Medical Industrial Complex wields these days.
