Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Rock Hudson

    Cagney_1994 — 19 years ago(December 05, 2006 01:20 PM)

Was he bitter about his sexuality ?
I know some gay men are quite comfortable and happy with who they are, but did Mr Hudson ever feel shame about his homosexuality ?
One (British) actor that springs to mind was the late Kenneth Williams (he of the 'Carry On' films).
Unfortuntaely, he died (not of AIDS) but with that very notion of shame and disgust that's associated by many, with being gay.
BTW, Rock Hudson was the most handsome-looking guy I've ever seen.
Unbelievable good lucks - I bet he could get any woman he desired (or guy).
    And I'm not gay.

5b4I don't think he was ever ashamed of his sexuality, but that's only a guess. He was a very funny, light-hearted and generous man who had a lot of fun in his life and enjoyed nearly every second of it and that includes the affairs he had.
Of course there was the strain of keeping his sexuality private and his friends did say that Rock Hudson was also a very private man, who didn't wear his emotions on a sleeve. So I can understand if there was some things about being gay that he didn't like.

No he wasn't and in fact in some circles he lived his life quite openly, having lovers liv at his house. In fact at first he didn't want to conceal his sexuality, but of course production members on films, agent wanted him to conceal for career purposes. Mr. Hudson knew he was gay but in fact it was a strain to hide it from reaching the public. In his day it was easier to hide it than it is now the press were different then.

I just finished reading his book and Rock was never bitter about his sexuality. He just struggled to keep that side of himself private throughout his life but he was never lying around wishing "why me?" or complained about it. He just accepted it and lived with it.
                        What a man.

No. He hated the homophobic response he would go through if the public found out. Reason why he lied about being gay.

There were gay actors in Hollywood who seemed to be full of self-loathing. Ryamond Burr and Charles Laughton come to mind. Hudson never struck me that way. There's a difference between hating being gay and fearing the public's reaction. Remember, when Hudson started his career homosexual acts were considered a crime.

Never came across like that to me either. Liberace also comes to mind about self-loathing,but not rock. But thats just my feeling

Exactly; "There's a difference between hating being gay and fearing the public's reaction"
I just read his book that was mostly authored by Sara Davidson. A really interesting read and very, very well written by Ms. Davidson.
There was no hint that he had any thing even near to self-loathing about his sexuality. Nor did she mention that any of the many gay men he had as friends and lovers have any such thing.
It strikes me as somewhat odd that they didn't have some conflicts about it since the attitudes toward homosexuality were way more condemnatory than they are now. But it is good that they didn't hate it or give themselves a lot of grief about it. At least not from what was told in Ms. Davidson's book.
Who ever really knows what goes on in another person's mind?
