I admit that I would like to hear about a few of those "not funny" pranks.
Feel free to PM me with some info, without actually mentioning any names. I would appreciate hearing some of those stories, if they don't take too long to type out. Please do send them to me!
Yup, he was a very, very good looking man. He was a cutie in the sixties and a hottie in the seventies. I think that he lost the baby face sometime in the seventies, because he sure didn't look "babyish" in "Don't be Afraid of the Dark" and "Ellery Queen". If he had lived longer, he probably could have gotten more roles in the eighties and nineties. Unfortunately, it wasn't meant to be. It's too bad, because he was extremely talented.
Personally, I think that he is (was) the best looking man ever to be in Hollywood. I can't think of anyone else who is even remotely as good looking as he was! My generation has been taught to admire the looks of Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. I don't care for those men's looks. I've also never looked twice at George Clooney and Pierce Brosnan. Even Timothy Hutton doesn't look1c84 exactly like his father. I've seen him in some youtube clips, and I just don't see the resemblance as much as some other IMDb users. Jim Hutton had something that no one else has.

Jim Hutton had a natural charisma and an off-the-cuff sense of humor that made him unique. To get into Where the Boys are, he practiced a part with a friend and his wife's ironing board. He and his friend went to the movie commissary where the director or whoever was auditioning was eating, they faked a confrontation, had a resolutiona, and the auditioning person went to him, gave him a card and said the call him. THAT's how he got the part of TV in Where the Boys are. The man had Hutspa! Unique combo with humor. And yes, good looking. Huttons also had a german shepard dog that almost bit Jim Weston and friend and fellow actor (well-known "character" actor) for being too emphatic while telling a story while visiting the Huttons. I hope you enjoy these tidbits. I don't want to get into the nasty pranks.

Thanks for those tidbits of information! I admit that I'm curious about the nasty pranks. Did he pull those nasties in the early sixties, when he was very young, or did he pull those when he was older? If he did so before the age of 30, then it's no big deal. I think that most of us have done stupid things in our youth. After about the age of 30 or so, it's not really funny anymore. Still, my bizarre sense of humor might result in my laughing if I hear about any of his nasty pranks.

Some pranks were over 30 and in poor taste. Some people would call a couple of them mean spirited. So we'll leave it at that. Not knowing details of relationships and all situations going on at the time, it is hard to differentiate the intentions.

Who knows if those incidents really happened, anyway? Perhaps some people were lying just to get their name in print, so to speak. (These stories are probably posted online somewhere by now.)
I did hear that he mooned some people when he was in collegeGIGGLE. I wonder if that story is true?

As for the nasty stories, I'm beginning to wonder just how many of them are true? It's easy to spread nasty rumors about someone after that someone is dead and he can't stand up for himself. Perhaps they're true. Perhaps there were two sides to the story. A lot of stories go around about deceased celebrities (ex. Joan Crawford, Bing Crosby, Judy Garland).
Maybe Jim Hutton wasn't perfect, but he sure was very talented. He did a lot of great movies and he was wonderful as Ellery Queen. I wish that he could have lived at least another 20 years, and done work as an older actor. He was so unbelievably georgeous, especially in the seventies. I consider him to be the sexiest man Hollywood has ever seen. I have had a couple of people tell me that I should be more interested in Timothy Hutton because he's closer to me in age and because he's still alive. This reasoning makes no sense. (I think I told those people that I think that Gary Cooper was quite attractive back in the thirtiestee hee.) Most of today's actors just don't have the looks which I admire, nor the talent. I'm interested in very few actors from this time period.

I agree with you. Very few actors today interest me. I prefer those from the 40s, 50,s and early 60s, when actors were acting. Of the men actors, I particularly enjoy Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau, Gary Cooper, Cary Grant, Basil Rathbone, Vincent Price, Bob Hope; of the women, Lucille Ball, Claudette Colbert, Kathryn Hepburn, amd Lauren Bacall.

I agree with you about most of the actors and actresses you mentioned. The only one on that list I can't stand is Vincent Price.
I love Lemmon and Matthau in the Grumpy Old Men series. I love Gary Cooper in "Ball of Fire". Cary Grant was great in "Walk Don't Run" and "Mr. Blandings Builds his Dream House". Basil Rathbone was better at playing an evil guy than a nice guy. Bob Hope was funny in "Bachelor in Paradise". (Jim Hottie and Paula Prentiss have small parts in this movie.) Lucille Ball was super in a film noir called "Lured". Claudette Colbert was great in "It Happened One Night". Hepburn was kind of hit and miss in my eyes. As long as she didn't overdo it, she was great. I love her low-key performances, like in "Undercurrent". Lauren Bacall was great in a number of movies, especially "How to Marry a Millionaire".
I also love Edward G. Robinson, Barbara Stanwyck, James Stewart, Jean Arthur, Humphrey Bogart, Leslie Howard, Peter Lorre and Gene Tierney.
As for contemporary actors, I love Tom Hanks, Kate Winslet, Denzel Washington, and sometimes Scarlett Johansson.
I don't know if you've seen "Bachelor in Paradise", but I highly recommend that one. (Bob Hope and Lana Turner are the stars here.) Also "The Honeymoon Machine"very funny movie!!!!
By the way, you mentioned that you love "Walk Don't Run". It's a remake of the forties movie "The More the Merrier". Have you seen that one? I saw it twice (about five and seven years ago), and found it depressing each time. It's funny at first, but it gets very sad later.

I have no idea what Jim did or didn't do in his private life. That's why I was asking the poster here who has done some research. I was three years old when he died, so I don't remember any gossip about him in the papers, etc. I have considered the possibility that some people (who knew him personally) might wish to slander a dead man (ie, state untrue things about him). At the same time, those things might be true. I have no way of knowing.
What nasty things have you heard about him over the years? I'm just curious.
By the way, my key interest is in his performances (and looks, of course), not in his personal life. I was just asking the other poster because I was midly curious.

MGM was in the early 60's still the premier studio of its time. MGM groomed Hutton as well as George Peppard, Paula Prentiss, Richard Chamberlain and Yvette Mimieux to above the title stardom. Of the above Peppard was the star of the first rank. MGM groomed Hutton as a new James Stewart
Hutton as we know co starred with the glorious Paula Prentiss in several MGM comedies and also supported Peppard in the Subterreans, and did a film with Jane Fonda. I recall Hutton went on a suspension for over a year to rid himself of the exclusive MGM contract. His ticket to freedom was 'Looking For Love'
While at MGM Hutton co starred with Lana Turner, Bob Hope, Paula Prentiss, George Peppard, Leslie Caron, Steve McQueen, and Yvette Mimieux he freelanced and co starred with the biggest stars of his era: Cary Grant, Roz Russell, Burt Lancaster, Charlton Heston and John Wayne in not one but two movies. If he had personal quirks well most of Hollywood have some edginess to their personalities. There is also a matter of Insurance, a studio insures its players and the Insurance companies are tough and if someone was really over the line they would not be insurable. Imagine Jack Warner who cast Jim Hutton in 'Never Too Late' or Cary Grant who personally requested Hutton for 'Walk Don't Run', or Ms. Russell who was a devout practicing Catholic in 'The Trouble With Angeles' or John Wayne ever dealing with an Actor who was anything but ok? Also the TV Networks also have a clause in their contracts for behavior and Hutton must have been ok or he would not have been cast by Universal TV as Ellery Queen.
When Tim Hutton won the Oscar he memorably stated He wished His Dad were there and Jack Lemmon was seen wiping his eyes and Robert Redford applauding as well as the great cheer from the Audience. When Tim sat down he was greeted by Peter O Toole who also said " I Wish Daddy were here too". All this bunk about

I suspect that some of the nasty things Jim did (if he did anything nasty at all) were in the privacy of his own home. It's possible that only his family members knew/know about these things.

I remember this part of the thread. Someone had shown up and written a rather nasty reply to me, calling me obsessed and all that. They claimed that they had pages and pages of info on bad things which Jim had done when he was a young man. I wrote a polite reply and asked them what they heard. Meanwhile, I see that some others wrote terrific replies, too. I see that the nasty post was deleted by the poster. It was quite the rude post - several paragraphs of nonsense. Let's just say that I gave them a reply which was far politer than they deserved.

The thing is, maybe Jim really wasn't a nice person in the real world. I don't know one way or another. Easy for some folks to gossip about him after his death, when he can't defend himself.
I'm only interested in what the celebrities do on the big screen. Their personal lives are none of my business.

And anyone reading your posts on this thread can easily see for themselves that you're far beyond 'mildly curious'; you are obsessed with Hutton.
