Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Michael Jackson

    CNJ — 7 years ago(March 16, 2019 02:36 AM)

Michael appeared to have suffered from borderline personality disorder.
Of the nine described symptoms described in this website, Michael clearly displayed seven of the symptoms, possibly eight out of nine.

    •
A long-term pattern of unstable intense relationships, such as idealizing someone one moment and then suddenly believing the person doesn't care enough or is "cruel" or "evil."
Michael's numerous falling-outs with various people in his life is illustrative of this.
He once considered Oprah Winfrey a "good friend," especially when she interviewed him in early 1992 and initially thought she was "wonderful."
But when Oprah refused to help Michael cover up and lie for him, all at once, Michael saw Oprah as an "enemy."
He badmouthed her to the press and his fan cult, calling her a "traitor" and a "sellout" to the "establishment."
Martin Bashir was another example…when Bashir offered to interview Michael, Michael saw Bashir as the one who could salvage his scandal-ridden, drug-pocked reputation and possibly help him discredit and bully his victims back into silence.
He saw Bashir as a "savior" and a "great friend."
But once Bashir aired his honest documentary, warts and all and refused to edit out and doctor the video to paint the golden image that Michael demanded, Bashir became another of Michael's long and growing list of "enemies" and "traitors."
Michael badmouthed Bashir also, calling him a "traitor" and shrieking that Bashir "betrayed" him and "stabbed" him in the "back."

Rapid changes in self-identity and self-image that include shifting goals and values, and seeing yourself as if you don't exist at all.
Michael had lots of identity issues…his excessive cosmetic surgery is illustrative of this in addition to shifting between the "misunderstood" Peter Pan to the "abandoned, betrayed victim" among other unstable personas.
Wade Robson eloquently clarifies this as he described to Oprah how Michael had shifted like a chameleon from being a fun, lively, dancing Peter Pan figure to a "father" figure, then abruptly to a distraught, "lonely," abandoned figure who used tears to manipulate his victims.

    •
Periods of stress-related paranoia and loss of contact with reality, lasting from a few minutes to a few hours.
Michael displayed this during his "interview" with Bashir and Bashir captured this, much to Michael's indignation.
Michael completely was out of touch with the reality of poor Bigi's discomfort when he had the stifling sheet over the baby's head, then dangled him out the window.
Another example of Michael's losing touch with reality was when he fancied himself being "great friends" with Lady Diana, despite Diana's actually being nervous and a bit frightened of him.
    Pc
He spun fictional tales of Diana allegedly ringing him up at "all hours" and of her being "secretly in love" with him, even though Diana, halfway across the globe, in reality was far too busy with her Royal duties, spending time with her family and
    TRUE
friends, raising her two boys and her humanitarian work to be carrying on anything with the unstable, delusional Michael.
Another vivid example…Michael calling emergency services in a drugged or drunken stupor, claiming that the fabled "illuminati" was allegedly "tryna kill" him.
He'd be so out of touch with reality that he'd make up stories about all these people and the "illuminati" being constantly "after" him.

Impulsive and risky behavior, such as gambling, reckless driving, unsafe sex, spending sprees, binge eating or drug abuse, or sabotaging success by suddenly quitting a good job or ending a positive relationship.
Chronic drug abuse, reckless spending sprees and sabatoging potentially positive relationships were Michael's specialties.
His wild shopping trips were legendary…and as we see in the footage that Bashir captured, never once did Michael say
    Please
    or
    Thank you
to any of the store staff.
He ended up bankrupt due to not only his wild spending, but also due to his numerous court catfights and his bribing victims, staff and witnesses into silence.
Another risky venture Michael re-started, as Bashir pointed out, was that even after he was declared "not guilty" of the charges, he turned around and once again, was enticing and grooming young boys into bed and grooming the families into accepting the recruiting, risking further trouble with the law.
    •
Wild mood swings lasting from a few hours to a few days.
Bashir captured that well in addition to the now-outcoming accounts of former staff members and former friends.
    •
    Ongoing feelings of emptiness.
Michael's out-of-control spending sprees and buying expensive trinkets for his huge mansions are illustrativ

You've really investigated thoroughly. It's kinda frightening.

What were examples of Marilyn's BPD?
For starters, Marilyn also had a series of unstable relationships and short-lived friendships.
Also like Michael, she had a long history of drug and alcohol abuse.
Also, she had a history of suicide attempts.
Like Michael, she engaged in risky behavior…she almost overdosed countless times and had affairs with high-profile men that she knew were married.
I may add more later, but those are a few samples I'm thinking of now.
