Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Piper Laurie

Saturday evening, Sept. 27, "A Very Special Evening" at the Pt. Townsend, Wasington film festival featured a showing of the classic film "The Hustler" with Paul Newman and Piper Laurie, followed by a stage interview of Piper Laurie by Robert Osborne of TCM. Piper looked very nice in a dark pant suit and hat, and answered many questions about her long career, relating many detailed anecdotes. After the stage interview, she walked down the steps of the stage and was talking to some people from the film festival and I was able to introduce myself- she said "Oh- I Know who you are- How about a hug?" We hugged and talked for a few moments, had our picture taken together by the festival photographer, and I was able to give her some scrap albums of magazine articles from her early starlet career. We shook hands when we parted. She was very kind and gracious, s star all the way.

Many years ago, when her sister Sherrye Cimino was still alive, she handled all of Piper's fan mail, and I had sent several fan letters to Piper through her. One afternoon I received a phone call from Sherrye and she asked me if I had a tape of "The Milkman", the second film that Piper had made from 1950, since Piper was going to visit her costar from the film, Donald O'Connor, and his wife. I was able to send a VHS tape to Sherrye and she gave it to Piper and they watched and enjoyed the film together, so I'm sure that is how Piper knew who I am, and she did write a thank you note to me on another occasion. Incidentally, Donald O'Connor died from a heart attack only a few weeks after the meeting with Piper, and he had also costarred with her in "Francis Goes to the Races".

Just adding my own experience. Around 1951 when I was a youngster my mom and I had the opportunity of going to the Detroit Institute of Arts building where appearing IN PERSON were Jeff Chandler and Piper Laurie. I think they were on a promotional tour promoting their recent films, not sure just what. I only remember her beautiful presence and Jeff Ch.'s strong good looks. We acquired a few souvenirs, a signed photo of each, and some happy memories.

              • from a Canadian 😉
