He got caught up in making intentionally bad movies to the point that now he can't direct anything besides bad movies. I don't think he was ever that good to begin with though, so it's not great loss. At his best, his movies were just trashy, no brain fun.

Like Robert Zemeckis, he's become obsessed with technology to the point where it hurts his films. Zemeckis was a maniac about mo-cap until his films bombed so badly he had to do something else.

Man if that doesn't nail it. That and being too proud of being able to be fast and cheap
The fact that he is able to do so much like the music and editing is impressive. But it doesn't mean he should be. He was rolling out when having an editing station with all kinds of fancy toys was right there. And he fell in love with it. But used it like a guy that wanted to be a filmmaker, not one that was already there. You can see in his work he was having fun fooling around with effects and new technology. But he should have been focused on the end product.
If he wanted to experiment with software and learn how to do things, it should have been on side projects, not real ones. You can tell most of his stuff was about the effect and scene over the actual completed project. You cannot just envision cool effects and wrap a movie around. His biggest failing was 16d0ignoring the overall story and the overall films.

His style just isn't fashionable anymore, which isn't really a criticism. The masses, even the indie film lovers, have gotten too numbed by this sort of ultraviolent Americana exploitation genre. Still, he's done too many of these movies that they aren't that distinguishable.

when i saw desperado,I thought we might have another joel cohen or spike jonze;a modern film maker with a unique eye and something to say..tightroping between homage to others and a special signature..alas we had a frat boy..living in the dorm and doing totally kewl stuff..its his call, and it would be unfair to be mad or disappointed..he's made lots of money and he's having fun..

I think you might've been swayed by the 5b4hype. I remember when Desperado came out and how the media kept hyping him and other directors up when Tarantino became popular. Ever since Pulp Fiction, any time some young guy directed, everyone was expecting him to be the next big thing. There was another guy who was also overhyped, too. (I forgot his name, but he was an Asian guy who directed action flicks.) He, Guy Ritchie and Rodriguez were all uber-hyped. The only person who kind of lived up to the hype was Ritchie.

I think he's capable of making better films, which is something I find extremely disappointing. He needs to stop focusing on being the jack of all trades and be the writer/director first and foremost. Focus on what's happening on set that day, leave the VFX work and whatever else he isn't amazing at to the people who simply are.
He said recently that sometimes he will demand less money so he can think of solutions creatively. He shouldn't screw himself like that, it isn't organic. If he's being offered the money to execute his vision. He should do it, and not short hand himself for the sake of it.
I hope he bounces back, some of his recent films can be kind of fun but it's not must see. Which is sad, maybe he's not capable of being the best, but he can do better.
He inspired independent/low budget filmmakers but never grew much as a filmmaker. Not every movie is going to set the world on fire, but I would like to see him at least try to do so.
