Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Eva Marie Saint

America is now obsessed by stars in an unhealthy way. They don't actually deserve this kind of attention. They`re only actors - not scientists who are triumphing over cancer or doing some other wonderful thing.

          She's right, of course.
But why does she think this is something new?
People went gaga over Gloria Swanson in the same way in the 20's, Clark Gable and Greta Garbo in the 30's, Rita Hayworth in the 40's, Marilyn in the 50's and Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton in the 60's.
Fan magazines were big sellers back then and those stars were turned into gods and godesses as much and Brad and Angelina ever were. Same kind of media frenzy (except we have MORE media today), same paparazzi beep and the same clamoring, adoring fans who want to know EVERYTHING.

            I know,
Every generation thinks they have invented what's been around for centuries, whether it's adoring stars, or sex.
