sorry dude have to agree with the board on this one. We don't watch monk for the quality Drama. It's a comedy! Just look at the last episode when the captain went to find his son at the concert there was the other cop there who called in sick. Thats funny the show is written for the purpose to get a laugh.
On the other hand '24' who won the best drama. No one has time to call in sick on that show. Each episode the viewer is embroiled in the international plot to blow up, or release whatever that will kill many people. The show is not written for comedy, and you don't laugh very often. However you are carried on the edge of your seat waiting for the next few seconds then oops the hour is up. Cliffhanger for next week!

I just can't get on board with 24. Anything that requires watching it every episode is too much work for me. That also explains why I've never gotton into Lost, which I'm sure I would enjoy if I just sat down and watched it.
The only one I've ever gotten into is that show Reunion that came on Fox, and they cancelled it and you never found out who killed the girl. I think it depressed me into not getting heavy into other shows like that. -

I agree that Monk isn't a comedy, but it definately is funny. As it is a crime show, the scenes relating to the crime and the crime investigation aren't funny; they are quite serious. But all the other scenes in relation to Monk, his personality and his relationships with other characters, are very funny. It should be classed as a drama-dy, but is there really such a thing? lol I suppose shows like Desperate Housewives, which, unlike Monk, is classed as a drama, could also fit in the drama-dy category.

"I love the show "Monk" and know that the show and lead actor - Tony Shaloub - deserve to be nominated for an Emmy - but in the category of drama. The comedy category makes no senses at all. The show always begins with a very bloody murder (never funny - always dramatic) and Tony S. does a fantastic job of portraying a mentally disturbed, tenacious, and very talented detective. While the character of Monk is often amusing, he is always very sad. It drives me crazy to see "Monk" listed as a comedy."It's comedy at its finest. The writers aren't suggesting that viewers consider crime and murder humerous. The comedy is based upon the deliverance in which the scripting has been created -throughout the process of solving these crimes.
You may need to loosen up a little. -

I'm a huge Monk fan. I love every episode. I have laughed at this show harder and longer than anything I can easily think of. I think it is a comedy. That said. There have been episodes that have reduced me to tears. Any episode that involves Trudy to a great extent. Especially a certain episode in season four. Monk (the show) deserves everything it gets. The labels of comedy and drama don't really apply to it. It's a story. A story about a man trying to overcome his problems. It is at times very touching and other times it is very funny. I don't think it really matters whether someone calls it a comedy or a drama. It's just a great show.

You're right, it's not a comedy. It's an offbeat crime show in the tradition of Remington Steele or Moonlighting, but the stories told are dramatic, and there are many sad scenes of Monk trying to deal with Trudy's murder and his own OCD. However, I'm glad they decided to treat it in a light and amusing way, otherwise it would be rather depressing.

it's just a crime/detective show with comic relief. Even though there's not constant laughs, when something funny happens it's REALLY funny!

what do you mean it is not a comedy. The show is very funny! I could see how you might get the opeining scene as a dramatic part in the show but the show is defintly a comedy. The show is based around Monk's phobias and all of his funny lines, plus his castmates. That is what a comedy is. A drama would be a show such as House M.D. The show is centered around the patients and there problems rather than the little bits of comedy here and there. That is what makes it a drama because it is centered around the dramatic scenes.

I couldn't have said it better myself. Having dramatic themes or aspects to the episodes does not change the fact that it is written as a comedy. Comedy without dramatic or tragic elements is called slapstick. This show doesn't claim to be slapstick. It claims to be comedy.and it is.
