Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Craig Sheffer

I've been a fan of Mr. Sheffer's ever since seeing him in "River Runs Through It" when it came out in 92. I feel he's one of the best American film actors of the last 30 years. Not only does he "talk soft & think loud," which good film actors do, he has incredible range. It's hard to believe it's the same actor in "River" & "Road Killers." Just goes to show that being a star has nothing to do with talent cause he acts circles around Brad Pitt in "River." I remember seeing an interview with Alec Baldwin once where he said he actually felt sorry for movie stars because they don't get to do that much acting. Maybe that has something to do with it. I get the impression Craig doesn't wanna be a big movie star. Well, it's definitely our loss.

I heard he is nervous around big crowds and he doesn't like to get involved with movies that may get him an award. I myself wish he wasn't that way because he is a real good actor and I have been a fan of his for a long time.

Probably so. I read somewhere on the internet that after he made "River Runs Through It" & "The Program" (probably the two movies of his with the highest profile), he took a break from acting & went to Europe for a year. Not a career move most actors on the cusp of major stardom would have chosen, I'm guessing.

Well, Matt Dillon isn't particularly interested in major stardom, either, but he works in filmseven directed one. Craig has been doing an awful lot of guest shots on episodic TV, the past few years. Not a good trend.
And, no, I don't want his brother to write him a role on a soap.

It is obvious Craig purposely avoids the spotlight. This choice has affected his career as he is going to C list movie actor fast. Some of his stuff has been terrible if not out right BAD. He is pretty much unreachable to most of his fans as I never see him do any premiers, social networking, interviews or anything. "Lies Between friends" was typical Made for TV-nothing special. If he is really happy with his career then good for him. Maybe it is his way of dealing with all the pressure involved with this industry. I would really like for him to reach out to his fan base a little though. One can hope right? 🙂

It would help his image a little bit.

Read his Bio under comments. By his own admission, he is basically saying he wasn't good looking enough, so he apparently got passed over for "leading man" parts.
Matt Dillon, as others have mentioned above, was DISCOVERED. Some talent scout saw him and liked the way he looked. Not so with Sheffer.

I think Nightbreed was probably Craig's biggest starring role. That said, I also enjoyed his performance in Hellraiser: Inferno.

When I see a star who has a recognizable face and has been acting for decades without breaking big, I wonder if they refused to sell out.
You have to essentially sell your soul to make it in Hollywood and I like to think these people like Craig didn't go down that path.
They see it as a job: show up, do it, go home.
