Do anyone know why he was uncredited in Red Dragon?

I recently rented the film Red Dragon because I read that Frank Whaley was uncredited in it and I wanted to see how small a part he had in it. He had a fairly rounded character, he had lines! He had camera closeups! He was a one of main ingredients to the climax, if he wasn't killed the main character would not have escaped the burning house and try to kill Edward Norton. I am just wondering why, maybe he ticked off the director or something because its unfair that he wasn't credited.

well shooti just finished watching the movie (for like the 10th time) and hadn't noticed that he wasn't credited until a moment ago (when searching to confirm my suspicion that ellen burstyn was the voice of grandma - also uncredited - she was). i saw the title of your thread and thought "oh good, an answer." apparently, no such luck, lol. if anyone knows why this was, please do enlighten us. thank you!

Actors appear uncredited in movies all the time: Jack Nicholson in Broadcast News, Dennis Franz & Charles Durning in Scarface (their voices), Sean Connery in Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves, Danny Glover in The Rainmaker, Samuel L. Jackson in Iron Man, Robert Downey, Jr. as his Iron Man character in The Incredible Hulk, John Candy in Career Opportunities (with Frank Whaley) and the aforementioned Frank Whaley in JFK, just to name a small few. Most of the time it's done as a favor to someone on the crew, usually the director or cast member, but sometimes it's done as a major surprise to the audience when the actor shows up.

I just watched School of Rock and he's uncredited in that too. Is he the most uncredited actor?? His acting was really funny in SoR and I remember he was also great in Red Dragon and JFK.
I don't think he's uncredited for the reason to surprise the audience because he's not that well known. Its not like Sean Connery in Robin Hood that's for sure! -

Julianne Moore was uncredited for the voice on the phone in Eagle Eye.
Maybe they do that instead of getting a percentage of the royalies?
The other things listed above..the marvel- stuff iron man and hulk are movies that are shown after the credits so that could be why they're not listed -

Don't forget Emilio Estevez in Mission Impossible, Anthony Hopkins in MI2, Bruce Willis in Loaded Weapon 1 and Expendables, Arnold Schwarzenegger in The Rundown and Expendables, Raul Julia in Havana, etc. I've always wondered why well known actors would not be credited. Julia asked to be uncredited in Havana after his request to have top billing with Redford was denied. Not sure about the rest.

I just watched it for the first time and thought that was him, yet he wasn't listed in the credits.
Maybe he needed the work, he is not that well known to do a cameo like some of other names that were mentioned in this thread.
