WHALEY, WHIPPING BOY IN THE BIZ by Dane Youssef
Something about actor Frank Whaley comes across as a youthful earnest schmuck. Really green, unfinished, wet-behind-the-ears. A lot of people he seems like the ideal whipping boy. The perky dork that just inspires the catalyist bully in you to smack him silly. You want to p'wn him 'til he cries. Oh sorry, I meant "dies."
And that's exactly why he played so many roles like that throughout his career: Pulp Fiction, Red Dragon, Swimming with Sharks, The Jimmy Show, Career Opportunties, Cold Dog Soup, etc.
His best stuff seems to come from his work in independents. Check out "Swimming With Sharks," "Homage" and "The Jimmy Show."
His own self-made pictures like "Joe the King," "The Jimmy Show" and "New York Serenade" have something special to them. That same kind of magic you know is only Frank.
