Wow..he WAS Dumbledore in HBP.

His performance in Half Blood Prince was better than the previous 3 combined. He managed to capture every single important characteristic of the character:
- The Quirkiness and odd jokes
- The kind, fatherly role to Harry, and others.
- The aura of extreme power and authority.
Also, his scene in the horcrux cave when he drinks the potion was fantastic. As was his with Draco and Snape in the end. He was just plain amazing in this film. And this is coming from someone who thought he was pretty horrible in the other 3.

I don't think so; he was AWFUL in Goblet of Fire, had not grasped the essence of the character! But in Half Blood Prince he's just AMAZING! The best performance in the film! also in Deathly Hallows: Part II; so great.

I thought he was spot on in all six films, honestly.
Quoting myself here, this I've written in another thread:
To me, Gambon is a dynamic, stronger and, somewhat ironically, a more virile version of Dumbledore. It's funny though, 'cause once Dumbledore's character was outed, Gambon still kept his masculinity but with a dash of elegance and quirkiness reflecting the new development. -

I have to assume you didn't read the books, then, as he was NOTHING like Dumbledore, particularly while yelling at Harry in Goblet of Fire.

I thought he was best in Prisoner of Azkaban. The hospital scene was perfect. He was poorest in Goblet of Fire but that was because of Newell. He was good in all the others.

I am out of step with a great deal of Potter fans in that I consider Gambon THE definitive Dumbledore. I prefer him to Harris who, while a fine actor, appeared so fragile in the second film that I can't fathom him keeping up the pace even if he'd lived. I actually consider Harris pitch perfect for the original Potter film, but at times in Chambers he looked to literally be standing at death's door.
Is Gambon's Dumbledore a wee bit out of step with the novels? At times, yes. But these are films merely based off the Harry Potter novels, and are thus separate works of art that have the creative license to be moved in directions that best fit them; they are not intended to be rote slaves to the novels.
Gambon is a brilliant actor. The series was elevated by having him in it's midst. He gave a layered, interesting, committed performance that left me loving the film Dumbledore just as much, if not a touch more, than the one in the novel. -

I hated Gambon as Dumbledore. His beard always looked dirty, not flowing white like Harris and the actual character. Gambon seemed too coarse - not elegant enough. There's several actors that could've done a better job and more resembled the actual character.

I agree wholeheartedly that Gambdon was a fine Dumbledore. Exceptional even. He's my hero in the films and a damn fine act, too. Regardless of what people read Dumbledore as in the books, I'm so happy that Gambdon got to play a badass and get away with it. He was magnificent for it.

Yes, he was very convincing in HBP. The way he delivered his lines in his final scene in the tower, firstly with Draco 'I knew a boy who made all the wrong choices' and then with Snape 'please'simple but brilliant.
