OK, this is just a fan letter.
Sharon Gless is MARVELOUS in Burn Notice!
She looks like a million bucks.
She is such a gifted actor.
Like most folks, I don't condone smoking (not a single da0friend or family member smokes; I'm never around cigarettes); but the way that Sharon Gless handles that "ciggie-poo" is genius! It is a terrific prop for her character. It works so well because of the perfectly manicured nails and the matchy-matchy earrings, and the [godawful] while pants, and the "perky" shirts. "Mother Weston" is a PERFECT specimen/remnant of the 60s. I've met some (unconscious but self-willed) women like her and her character is so rich it's always a treat.
Her relationship with her "son" (Michael) is perfect for this series. Love, pride, confusion, annoyance, impatience, frustration; always hoping for the best while anticipating the worst. She loves Michael but she would like to knock him upside the head and set him on a different career path; like any good mom.
Sharon Gless is just a terrific entertainer! -

I just finished the entire series (which was great) and really enjoyed Madeline as well. The reason I started watching Burn Notice in the first place was b/c SG was in it and I wondered what this quirky spy show was about.
Loved the Cagney and Lacey reference, and when Tyne Daly guest starred in one episode, the Madeline character had a great scene at the end with Michael. That's the season SG was Emmy nominated, I think, and deservedly so, IMO.
Re Madeline's smoking - I don't know if SG smokes in real life, but the character she was playing did and since a lot of people do smok5b4e it's certainly realistic to see Madeline puffing away. She probably smoked as much as Sam drank, which Madeline pretty much pointed out to him in one episode.
