She seemed on the fast track to being the next big time leading lady. Ended up becoming a supporting actress and tv star. It happens. I agree with another poster's comment about stars like Anne Hathaway scooping up roles that would have otherwise gone her way.

I don't think so. Not necessarily anyway. On her TV show she
is
the star (she steals scenes from William H Macy and Joan Cusack for goodness sake!) of her three upcoming films she's a lead in two and supporting in one.
Also, Emmy's TV schedule keeps her from taking as many film parts: she's locked in to shooting Shameless for 5-6 months. For example she said in an interview that she didn't audition of the Les Mis movie because she knew that the filming dates interfered with a season of Shameless that she was shooting.
I don't necessarily think she and Anne are often up for the same roles due to the fact that there's a 4-5 year age difference between them.
I think the next few years will determine what kind of actress she'll be. Shameless probably has another couple of seasons left in it but when it's done, her choices will determine whether she wants to be a "leading lady" an "indie actress", a "supporting actress", or if she prefers to work on TV or in theatre for that matter.
I put the labels in quotes because I think that more actresses are breaking out of the typecasting mold. For example, Julia Roberts was just up for a supporting actress award. Her next proje5b4ct is a TV movie. Actresses like Kate Winslet, Glenn Close, Nicole Kidman, have all done television film, series and miniseries in the past few years. They've done supporting roles too. I think that more actresses are going where the good parts are rather than just the starring roles. -

I agree. I'm not sure the age difference between Rossum and Hathaway is a big deal, but I'm not sure she'd even want to be like her. I love Hathaway, but Rossum's a better actor. They're very different actors imo.
