I just heard the same thing, Five. It was sad to hear. But, age 96? God bless him for living that long!
The first time I saw him on TV, of course, was in the original INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS, as telecast on the old "Creature Features" that used to air on NYC's old Channel 5, Saturday nights, 8:30-10PM. I think was in sixth grade, then. And, up to that point, it was the scariest b/w science fiction film I'd ever seen. Evil aliens from outer space that look just like us? And, take us over while we sleep?
You can bet I was nervous about nodding off when I went to bed after the movie's famous (revised) conclusion. Lol!
After that, I seemed to see him everywhere. From his cameo in the TV debut of the 1978 remake, to his addition to the cast of Bea Arthur's little-known (but delightfully hilarioous) one-season wonder; "Amanda's By-The-Sea."
He was a truly versatile actor, in a time when most actors try-but-fail to be only so they won't be typecast as one kind of genre-star. Thank you, Mr. McCarthy, for all your wonderful years of entertainmentand the great memories I'll always have of all your roles.
