The guy playing Littlefinger claims to mix it up depending on which company he is with - playing himself 'up' or 'down' so to speak.

It's like an archetype - the accent is supposed to be modelled after something which represents the qualities that wished to be expressed in the Westeros reality, ie. English speaking aristocratic societal set with many of the analogous cultural meanings.
Much of the medievalist fantasy genre is modelled in some way after European archetypal models.

i love his acting, his accent is hit or miss and you can feel the forced "accentness at times". tht being said i think he is an excellent actor and does an excellent job
THAT BEING SAID. Roy Dotrice's accent is the true tyrion lannister
melodic, impish.. so perfect.. heres a sample

Considering the show isn't based in England, not having it 100% is just frickin' fine. Honestly, in an alien world they could all have American accents and it would work being as it isn't historical- long as they don't mix accents between characters supposedly from the same area.

I am not sure there is rule somewhere that all GOT characters have to be English or speak perfect British English.

the accent just isn't quite convincing to me (I'm English)
So you've been to Westeros, then? (Hint: The books and TV show don't take place in England, so your question is moot.)

His accent sounds somewhere between Cersei's and Jaime's and no, it's not in England so characters could speak in a Jamaican accent if they wanted, so I think it is just fine. I actually thought he was British (I must say I'm not a native speaker).

To me he sounds like Billy Zane in Titanic Posh and plumy, a bit over the top, but its meant to be because most people are below him no pun intended. Great acting IMHO.

Bottom line even if his accent is a bit off, he gets some of the best lines in the show and delivers flawlessly! If the accent annoys you, I think the annoyance would be quickly diminished by the character himself.

I can't hear when English or Irish accents are wrong so I can't understand why they bug people.
Then I hear an actor trying to do a New York accent and it's like nails on a chalkboard.

Someone may have mentioned thisbut while it's a fictional "world" to begin with, as well as having perhaps the entire cast being from all over Europe, wouldn't all of the actors accents vary to begin with?
I'm from the states and I've been able to fool Europeans into believing in from the UK, having grown up listening to punk music. While I'm not from the UK, I think Peter's accent is more than believable! Has anyone heard Madonnas game accent? Now that's pathetic..

I'm English and I thought he was too after watching GoT. Was surprised to find out he's American.
Regardless, the character isn't from England, so it wouldn't matter anyway lol

Speaking as someone who has actually done numerous English accents, I would have to agree. His is quite pathetic in fact. I knew he was an American from the moment I heard him.

Stating it's a fictional world doesn't give any credits. The world and the accents are based on England, according to producers. That's why North have Northern English accents and the South Southern Engli7ecsh.
Whether they sound authentic or not is another question..
